Doctor Alsworth Fann was born 1845 in Sampson, North Carolina. Doctor was his given forename, at birth, as is evidenced by the first census in which he appears at age 4: Doctor Fann.[1] He was the son of John Fann and Bythenia Kelley.[2][1][3]

He served in Company A, 71st Regiment,[4] Infantry North Carolina Junior Reserves in the military during the US Civil War.[5][6]

Alsworth married Edith Ann (Royal) Fann (abt.1848-abt.1924) on 17 Mar 1870 in Sampson, North Carolina.[2][7] As of 1880, they had no children.[8]

A 4th class pension for service in Company A, 71st Regiment of North Carolina through Apr 1864 (Confederate Soldiers) was applied for 3 Jul 1909, and approved:[4][9]

I am not able to do but very little work now. I have rheumatism and my lungs are very weak. I am old and need a pension.

He lived until 17 May 1921 in Sampson, North Carolina, United States.[3] His biography can be found in The Heritage of Sampson County, North Carolina 1784-1984.[10] A memorial plaque was raised in his honor, along with other close Fann family by great-niece Annie Belle (Fann) Honeycutt, at Piney Green Baptist Church Cemetery, Salemburg, Sampson, NC: Find A Grave: Memorial #74649634. Doctor Alsworth Fann apparently left no will, and his estates was settled in 1922.[11]
