Biography

1776 Project
Private James Freeman served with Connecticut Militia during the American Revolution.

James was born Mar 31 1717 in Preston, Connecticut, the son of John Freeman [1] [2] and Abigail Witter.

James married Phebe Kinney / Kinni / Kinne on 16 Aug 1739 at Preston / Griswold, New London, Connecticut [3] [4] [5]

In 1758, he is mentioned in his aunt, Elizabeth Brewster's estate distribution.[6]

By 1779, he was a resident of the Saratoga District, in Albany County, New York, where he was taxed (along with his sons James, Gideon and Elisha).[7]

He probably served as a Private with Connecticut militia during American Revolution, but it could possibly be a son or other person with same name, since James would have been 59. [8]

He passed away Jan 5 1801 in Washington County, New York.[9]

He is buried in Freeman Family Cemetery, Easton, Washington, New York. [9]

Research Notes

1800 census in Colchester, New London, Connecticut is 'not' this James Freeman, since oldest male is 26-45, when James would have been 83. [10]

There are multiple 1800 census for James Freeman in New York. There are 2 listed next to each other in Ballston, Saratoga, 1 of which has a male over 45, [11] but there are no other references to this location.

There are many Rev War sources for James Freeman in Connecticut from 1775 - 1783, but difficult to determine if it is this James, a son with same name, or another person, especially since 1800 census in Colchester is a younger person with same name that could have also served.

Was James Freeman the brother of John, owner of the Freeman farm? This farm was the site of the Battle Of Saratoga.

Freeman-3331 and Freeman-1426 appear to represent the same person because: Birth and death dates and places match; wife matches.
