Biography

James was Choctaw.

James was born about 1785 and little else is know of his origins. He does appear on the Armstrong Roll of 1831[1], and in 1832 several Gardner families traveled together on the Trail of Tears to the new Choctaw Nation arriving at Fort Towson.

These emigrant groups were led by: James Gardner, John Gardner, William Gardner, Lewis Gardner, and Isaac Gardner.[2] Online family trees link these men as brothers, their father being one John Gardner, but a source for this has not been located. However, it is stated in the biographical sketch for Edward J. Gardner (Jerry L., Noel, James) from "A Standard History of Oklahoma" that Isaac, Jerry(Jeremiah), James, Noel and Edmond are brothers, but does not mention John, Lewis, and William, nor the name of their parents.[3]

For the James Gardner family, It is assumed that Margaret is his wife as other online trees list a Margaret as his spouse. However, the Emigrants Register does not indicate familial relationships. Thus, because of the age gap between James and Margaret, she could be his wife or daughter. For this reason a profile for Margaret has not been created.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:
