Biography
Jochim Ghijsen was born (according to his marriage record) in Hamburg (now in Germany) in about 1579. He was living in Amsterdam, Nederland, in 1612 when he married Trijn Gerritsdr, the widow of a man named Bartel Bartelsz. She was recorded as age 41, but because she had been recorded as 21 in 1605 and she went on to have four children over the next ten years after 1622, she was probably about age 28.

Research Notes
Disputed Identity
Jonathan Pearson, in First Settlers of Albany,[2] mistakenly identified New Netherland settler Jochem Wessels (1600-1681) as the father of Trijn Jochems, and some later researchers have followed his lead, thus confusing Jochem Ghisen with Jochem Wessels. These authors also identified Trijn Gerrits as a first wife of Jochem Wessels. The names Ghijsen and Wessels are clearly different, nether Trijn nor her husband is mentioned in Jochem Wessels' will, and there are no contemporary records that connect Wessels with Trijn, her husband, or Jochem Ghijsen.
