Biography

Moab is believed to be the son of James Hale Sr. (abt.1740-abt.1830) and Martha Elizabeth (abt.1745-) (maiden name unknown). It is estimated that Moab was born in 1783 in North Carolina. His father was documented living in Hertford County, North Carolina, in 1779. Then, in 1785, his father was documented in Cumberland County, North Carolina. The precise location of Moab's birth is unknown. Between 1794 and 1796, James Hale moved from Cumberland County, North Carolina, to Oglethorpe County, Georgia. It is in Georgia that we begin to find records for Moab. On 7 Nov 1811, Moab Hale married Fanny Whitehead in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. [1]

Records

Beginning in 1807, Moab appears on tax records in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. [2]

1820 Census in Salem, Clarke, Georgia. [3]

1830 Census in Clarke County, Georgia. [4]

1840 Census in Clarke County, Georgia. [5]

1850 Census in Clarke County, Georgia. [6]

Here are a few excerpts from a book by Forrest D. Hale, Sr., which may shed light on a few interactions between father and son.

On 2 July 1820, James Sr. filed a writ in Superior Court of Clarke. Co., Ga. suing his son Moab for $83 plus interest. The writ stated that Moab agreed to pay James Sr. $42 for employment at the rate of $6 per month on 8 July 1817. The writ also stated that Moab had collected money on two notes payable to James, Sr. but that Moab had had never given him the money. One note was from Jonas Hale for $29 dated 25 December 1817. The other note was for $12 from William Floyd, payable 25 December 1817.

James Sr. filed a suit against Moab on 24 August 1820. The writ stated that James, Sr. had sold Moab one mare for $30. James Sr. paid $3.25 to Philip Colbert and $1.25 to Fredrick Gottson for Moab. The suit also asked for $5.00 for two bars of iron, a saddle blanket, and girt that James Sr. had sold to Moab. On 24 August 1820, James Sr. filed another suit against Moab claiming that Moab had collected $200 from William Pittard on a note, dated 8 July 1817, due James Sr. and that Moab had kept the proceeds. The records do not show whether or not these disputes were ever settled.

Research Notes

Calculating Moab's birth and death dates:

  • Married 1811, making a birth year of approximately 1783 more plausible than one of 1793. [1]
  • Age 50-60 in the 1840 Census. [5]
  • Age 67 in the 1850 Census. [6]
  • Administrators of the estate of Moab Hale applied for Letters of Administration on 27 May 1857, indicating he had died before that date. [8]

there is only one of the profiles listed - the other two have been combined as stated above. What were in the 2 newer profiles?

Everything still remains. Only 1 merge has been made and I made that 5 minutes ago, after waiting 30 days for a response from the manager of the oldest profile, John Hiemstra.

Im not sure this should be merged until all 3 profiles can be seen to see the difference. Right now only thing you can see is that three profiles exist-where?

Hi Carolyn,

The merges will have to be made in 2 steps. Since John Hiemstra has not replied, and his profile is the first created, we have to wait for him to weigh in. Ann

Hi John, did you give your OK to the merger of your profile of Moab Hale WT 1086 and my profile of him WT 7143? I certainly agree this should be done. I am sorry about this duplicate...when I did my profile yours did’t show up or I would never have entered mine on the tree. Yours is far superior to mine and I would want nothing of mine moved except the biography. I would like that to be include on his profile. Lula Tuttle Sinnott

Hale-5829 and Hale-1086 appear to represent the same person because: These are the same man, at the same time and place. There is little detail in the Hale-5829 profile.
