Private George Hartman served with Pennsylvania Militia during the American Revolution.
George Hartman is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A203529.
George "Moritz"[1] Hartman is said to have been born in York, PA. However, at the time of his birth the area was Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. York County, Pennsylvania was created in 1749.[2] At this time there are no records found of George Moritz Hartman's childhood. George was called Moritz on all his records. At that time most people could not read or write so his first and last name were spelled in a variety of ways on legal records.
Marriage
A marriage record has not been found yet for Moritz and Margaretha Craydle Wolf but it is estimated that they married about 1766[3] and probably in York Co, PA. Margaretha is the daughter of Johann "Peter" Wolff and Anna Maria Agnes Schmidt[4]
Pennsylvania
In 1766 Moritz Hartman of York Town, York Co, PA, and his wife Margaretha, borrowed 120 pounds Pennsylvania money from Jacob Bott and John Hagner. This debt was satisfied in 1769.[3] About 1770 Moritz's father-in-law died and he and his wife Margaretha are included in the probate paperwork.[4]
Virginia
By 1774 Moritz Hartman and his wife have moved to Berkeley Co, VA (now WV). They are found in the deed books of that county purchasing lots 105 and 106 in the town of Mecklenburg (Shepherdstown).
[5]
Military
George Hartman served in Col. Moses Hazen's Regt. on the PA Continental line as per the DAR patriot index. [6]
Legal Matters
In Berkeley county in 1778 Moritz was arrested for some sort of issue with John Napzinger. There were damages to be paid. Moritz failed to show up at court (possible he was ill or maybe with a military unit?). [7] On the 18 Jun 1778 Moritz is again absent from court for the Napzinger case.
[8] In August of 1778 Moritz is finally able to appear at court and he comes with his lawyer. The Napzginger suit is continued with consent of both parties.
[9] In March 1779 this suit was dismissed. I was never able to find documents that tell what this suit was all about.[10]
Residence
Moritz Hartman continues to live in Berkeley Co, VA(now WV). He is found on tax lists for the years 1785-1796.
1785 Tax List[11]
Moritz seemed to be a man of modest means. I don't think he was a farmer as I have not found any farm land transaction deals. He purchased and then sold a lot and home in the town of Mecklenburg, Berkeley Co, VA in 1797, lots 105 & 106, to Andrew Grubb. [21]
Moritz supposedly moved on to Pendleton county where his other children went before him. Although there is no 1800 census for this area, the 1810 census shows a Morret Hartman. This person is basically too young to be George Moritz Hartman Sr. This is most likely his son Moritz Jr. His wife Margaret appears on this census without him.[22][23]
No land transactions have been found for Moritz Sr. in Pendleton Co, VA (now WV). However, with his wife is living in a house in the town of Franklin Pendleton Co, VA (now WV) and on the 1810 census questions arise, did they rent/lease it? There are no probate papers found and no other paperwork to indicate that he was ever in Pendleton county except that his wife was there after he died.[24]
Death
Death date and location is really unknown. There have been family trees that have been posting it as 1810 Pendleton Co, VA (WV now) based on the DAR Patriot Index cited above.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with George by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with George:
