Sophia was born on March 25, 1854 in the village of Neudorf in the Glückstal district of the Odessa area and Black Sea region of South Russia to Balthasar Hieb and Carolina (Ohlauser) Hieb. She was the ninth of their 10 children. Sophia was baptized on March 28, 1854.[1]
Immigration
On May 13, 1874, at the age of 19, Sophia, her parents, and 1 sibling arrived in Baltimore, MD aboard the S.S. Hermann traveling from Bremen, Germany.[2]

In 1876, around the age of 22, Sophia married Jacob Bittner (1852-1926).

Death
On August 24, 1903, at the age of 49, Sophia passed away in Hanson County, SD. She is buried in Plum Creek Baptist Cemetery in Emery, SD.[3]
