Biography

On his marriage to Anna Barbara Durrenberger in Gundershoffen (today 67110 Niederbronn-les-Bains, Alsace, France) in 1746, Johann Jacob Huser was called the son of the late Peter Huser. [1] He was probably the son of Peter Hauser (1690-1725) and Anna Oehler, who married in Gundershoffen on May 11, 1713, as that is the only Peter Hauser (or similar) found in Gundershoffen of the previous generation. Peter Hauser was killed by a falling tree on December 20, 1725 in Gundershoffen, and Anna Oehler then married Ulrich Billman/Bielmann on January 21, 1727. [2]

Jacob and Barbara had three children in Gundershoffen, who were baptized in the Gundershoffen Lutheran church:

1. Johann Peter in 1747;

2. Anna Barbara in 1749; and

3. Mara Salome in 1751. [3]

In 1751, Jacob and Barbara emigrated to Pennsylvania on the ship Edinburgh. It is not known whether any of the children survived to emigrate, as the Edinburgh ship lists do not include children. No sign of any of them has been found in Pennsylvania. Jacob’s signature by the baptisms of his children in Gundershoffen matches the immigrant’s signature as recorded in Pennsylvania German Pioneers, by Ralph Beaver Strassburger. [4]

Barbara and Jacob had at least two more children together in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, both of whom were baptized by Reverend Waldschmidt at Jerusalem Reformed Church in Weisseichenland, aka White Oaks, near Penryn, Lancaster County, PA:

4. Elisabeth Hausser, born December 4, 1752 (no baptism date is provided), baptized with godparents Elizabeth Kohe and Michael Stoetz [5];

5. Barbara Hauser. Born December 15, 1754 and baptized December 24, with godparents George Mueeler and Barbara Mueeler [6].

Barbara appears to have died soon after the birth of her daughter Barbara, as Jacob Hauser married Anna Maria Rohrer in about 1755 and had his first known child with her, Anna Maria, on May 2, 1756. [7] Further documentation that the same Jacob married both wives is needed, but no further record of Jacob's wife Barbara has been found after the baptism of Jacob's daughter Barbara.

Jacob’s children with Anna Maria Rohrer, all baptized in the First Reformed Church of Lancaster, were:

6. Anna Maria, born May 2, 1756;

7. George, born June 1, 1757;

8. Reinhard, born September 10, 1759; and

9. Christopher, born August 23, 1762. [8]

On July 24, 1753, Jacob warranted 85 surveyed acres in what is today Elisabeth Township, Lancaster County, PA. [9]

Jacob was still alive on December 1, 1768, when Anna Maria is referred to in the will of her father (Johannes Rohrer of Lampeter, Rohrer-69) as Ann, the wife of Jacob Howser. Had he died by then, typically she would have been referred to as his widow.

No death records have been found for either Jacob Hauser or Anna Maria Rohrer.

Lancaster County Hausers, online, is a good general source. [10]

Research Notes

There appears to have been another Jacob Hauser, in Lancaster County at the same time, who had children Laurentius in 1761 and Jacob in 1764 with wife Margaretha. Or possibly this is the same Jacob, and his wife's name Margaretha is a misreading (or misremembering by the pastor) of his wife Maria. [11]

No evidence has been presented that he was the father of Hauser-214, Hauser-216, Hauser-219, Hauser-221, Hauser-217 or Houser-2236, as shown here.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Jacob by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Jacob:
