NOTE ON Bartholomew's ORIGNS:

Following merge- The suggested father and mother were removed. The reason for this is based on reading of the 2 genealogy books listed below, Bartholomew was not the son of Peter Jacobi and Maria Heuer. In fact, even though Helen Eaton Jacoby Evard provided details of her extensive research in the final chapters of her Bartholomew genealogy book (summarized at the end of this profile), Bartholomew's parents are not known.

Reasons for Bartholomew not being Peter Jacoby's sons are:

1. There is no reference to Bartholomew in the highly detailed chapter about Peter and Maria Heur Jacoby, nor is a Bartholomew included in the Index of the genealogy book by Henry Sylvester Jacoby located online at: The Jacoby Family Genealogy : a record of the descendants of the pioneer, Peter Jacoby of Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Author: Henry Sylvester Jacoby, 1930. Pages 98-105. located at: https://seekingmyroots.com/members/files/G003570.pdf

2. No parents are listed for Bartholomew in the book specifically written about him and his descendants in the genealogy book titled Descendants of Bartholomew Jacoby IDENTIFIER 2028366 CREATOR Evard, Helen Eaton Jacoby, b. 1888 SUBJECT Jacoby family, Cramer family, Jacobs family, Leonhard family, Waddell family PAGE COUNT 356 located at: https://www.familysearch.org/library/books/records/item/474347-descendants-of-bartholomew-jacoby?offset=44571

Background to publication of Bartholomew's genealogy book.

Acknowledgement chapter

In the Acknowledgement chapter on pages 3 and 4 of her 1955 genealogy book, Helen Eaton Jacoby Evard explains why her research on Bartholomew Jacoby was not included in the 1930s Jacoby genealogy book by Henry Sylvester Jacoby. Researchers wanting to know more about her reasons need to read the chapter.

Variations in the Spelling of the last and first name

In the chapter titled The Name Jacoby on pages 5-6, Evard provides a detailed explanation of the various spelling variations to be found when researching ancestors that can be summed up by these quotes from her writing:

  1. During this period spelling was a much more elastic matter than it is now, and even a highly educated person could, and did, sign his name in whatever spelling occurred to him at the moment.
  2. Bartholomew's last name was Jacob, Jacoby, and even James in 1787, and John (Bartholomew's son) was taxed as Jakobi and Jacobi. Bartholomew consistently spelled his name Jaccoby, but he was convinced that it was the "Dutch" for James.

Many Name Variations In a later chapter, more name variations are found and they are listed here to show name variations and they also provide some information on location and land sales.:

1775 tax list of Pine Grove Township, Berks Co: includes the name Barthel Jacob among the married men. His name continues there through 1791, generally as Bartholomew or Barthow or Bartel Jacoby: in 1787 he is listed as Bartel James, and in 1788 Bartel Jacob.

1 Jun 1800: Bartholomew and family arrived in Natchez June 1, 1800. The records of his children indicate that by 1800 they were calling themselves by the name of James, but Bartholomew was a little slower to adapt himself to the English version.

On Feb. 7, 1801, Mr. Girault then sold 100 French acres, ... the deed was witnessed by Bardal Jacoby and Nathaniel Brown. On Feb.13, 1801, Pollicarpo Regillo and his wife Margaret sold this 100 acres to Bartholomew James. 1792, Bothel Jacobus, of Tyrone Twp., bought 193 3/4 acres, called "Rose of Sharon," 1796 ...He was referred to in this second deed both as Bothe! Jacobus and Bothe! Jacoby; he signed, bardul Jacoby. His wife Catherine signed by mark.

Bartholomew's History

Bartholomew's life is described on pages 9- 11 and excerpts, with spacing added to improve readability, are copied below:

Birth

BARTHOLOMEW JACOBY (c. 1747-1830+ )' was believed to have been born in Pennsylvania: he died in Mississippi.

Marriage

He married, about 1770, in Berks Co., Pa., Maria Catharine Mayer (bap. Dec. 17, 1749-1820+ ). She was a daughter of Egidius and Eva Barbara Mayer,• and was baptised Dec 17, 1749 at Host Church,• Tulpehocken Twp., Berks Co., Pa. The sponsor was Unruh

More details about Maria Catherine's Family Maria Catharine Mayer's family history details are found in 2 chapters in Bartholomew's genealogy book. Pages 14-17 titled MAYER ANCESTRY JOHANNES MAYER describes her grandparents and EGIDIUS (or GIDEON) MAYER pages 18-21 describes her father.

Children On page 11, Evard writes: We do not have the complete list of Bartholomew's children; the oldest and the youngest were sons, and there may have been five or six daughters between them,

  1. JOHN JACOBY (Nov. 1, 1771-April 9, 1844) married Catharine Gamby.
  2. SOPHIA JAMES (cir.1780) was said by her brother Peter to have married the boatman who had brought them down the Mississippi, and who died within a month. Sophia James married, June 17, 1800, in Adams Co., Miss., John McGinty. Sophia McKinley married, January 18. 1801, at St. Catherine, Adams Co., Miss., Jesse King. They moved to Bogue Chitto in Pike Co.; and there, in the 1816 census, Jesse King and his wife had a family of three boys and two girls, all under 16. Jesse was taxed in Bogue Chitto from 1816 through 1835, with a farm of 320 acres and one or two slaves. The tax list still on record which follows 1835, that of 1841,does not contain his name, nor an estate in his name; we may suppose the family moved elsewhere.
  3. BARBARA JAMES married, Feb. 28, 1802, in Adams Co., Miss., Simon Hook. On January 15, 1802, Simon and Benjamin Hook bought 100 "arpanes, French measure," from John and Mary Girault, the land lying by the waters of St. Catherine's, joining the lands of Joseph Ford, William Ryan and Robert Ford. On Dec. 30, 1804, Simon and Barbara Hook sold the undivided half of this, 50 arpanes, to Benjamin Hook. No further Mississippi records of them have been found, and they apparently moved out of the state.
  4. CHRISTEANA JAMES (Oct 13, 1786-April 19, 1853) married, first, John Pierce, and, second, Thomas Rule.
  5. PETER JAMES (Sept. 23, 1789-March 18, 1869) married Charlotte Siddon.

Children's Notes:

  • The records of his children indicate that by 1800 they were calling themselves by the name of James, but Bartholomew was a little slower to adapt himself to the English version.
  • 3 of the above-named children - John, Christeana, and Peter have their own histories in the chapter titled Third Generation on pages 22-39.

Children Needing Removed Based on Index searches of the various last names and related text search of Evard's Bartholomew genealogy book and Henry Sylvester Jacoby's Peter Jacoby and his descendants' book, 2 children need to be removed from Bartholomew's children list. One child is Phillip - Jacoby-340. The other is James Jacoby-Jacoby-344.

Changing Places of residence, land purchases and sales

Based on tax records and land sales, Bartholomew and his family moved to a number of places in Pennsylvania, possibly to West Virginia, and eventually to Mississippi where they continued to move about. In old age, he and his wife resided with his son, Peter, in Bogue Chitto, Mississippi.

Revolutionary War Service

The family tradition that Bartholomew served in the Revolutionary war is probably correct, if not subject to proof. Mrs. Elliott writes, in the Blue Book of Schuylkill County, "Scarcely two-thirds of the war records of Berks County have been preserved. The bulk of those missing will never be found, for they were likely burned in Washington in the fires of 1808 or 1814. Of six battalions of Berks County Militia no complete records have ever been found." Under the circumstances we have to enter him as "Patriot" for membership in S.A.R. and D.A.R. [1]

Oath of Allegiance

He signed the Berks County Oath of Allegiance on May 29, 1778, before Justice Peter Spycker.

Attempts to Identify Bartholomew's Parents Starting on page 245 and ending on page 256, Everhard provides more details of her research to identify Bartholomew's father in sub-chapters under the main title Appendix- Family of Bartholomew Jacobs, Bartholomew Jacobs, Notes on Bartholomew Jacobs and Relatives, and Early Jacobs and Jacobys. Evard mentions a number of names, and also describes the story of a nameless Jacoby who was beheaded by Indians and could possibly be Bartholomew's father.

Final Research Notes The original sources for this profile were from several Family Trees and the links did not work. Instead, the main resources for this upgraded profile were the books: Descendants of Bartholomew Jacoby by Evard, Helen Eaton Jacoby and The Jacoby Family Genealogy: a record of the descendants of the pioneer, Peter Jacoby of Bucks County, Pennsylvania by Henry Sylvester Jacoby. Additional sources were Ancestry.com, FamilySearch, and Find A Grave.

Quality of the Genealogy Sources Both of the two genealogy books provide detailed individual histories, detailed citations, research methodologies, indexes of associated family names, and family trees and were far above Ancestry and FamilyTree for evidence.

Batholomew was born about 1740. He passed away about 1830. [2]

According to sources and full explanations - Bartholomew is NOT the son of Peter or Maria Jacoby .. He is unfortunately listed with them on FAGM - but this is wrong -- and a suggestion needs to be made to FAGM to remove him.. Job for another day.-- Sone 27 April 2024- now we wait for response.

Jacoby - 598 has been merged into Jacoby -61. Removed wrong parents.

The sources added by Debbie show an overwhelming (lack of) evidence to support the idea that Bartholomew Jacoby/James from Tulpehocken is a son of Peter Jacoby and Elizabeth Heur of Bucks's County. Seeing as the probable (and frequent) mis-assignment of those profiles to Bartholomew is preserved in the text of the biography, I suggest that Bartholomew be de-linked from his current Wikitree parents.

Because Bartholomew married a woman from Berks County, he is likely to related to a Jacoby/Jacobi lineage from Berks. I wonder if he might somehow descend from Martin Jacobi (Jacobi-173), who married Anna Catherine Bischoff (Bischoff-365). Strausstown Roots shows an unsourced list of their children, including a Petrus who has the same birth date as the Bucks County Petrus, who married Elizabeth Heuer. The unsourced list of children also shows a daughter Anna Catharina, who emigrated to Berks and married Valentine Neu/Ney. Usually when Strausstown Roots provides specific dates, the sources are included--but not in this case. There must be European church records found for this Jacobi family.

Jacoby-598 and Jacoby-61 appear to represent the same person because: They are the same person. Please consider approving this merger - Jacoby -61 has a large amount of new evidence based information compared to Jacoby -598- so the manager of Jacoby -598 only has to approve and any clean-up can be quickly done after merge.
There are 2 Bartholomew Jacoby profiles Jacoby-61 created 2 Dec 2011 and Jacoby-598- created 28 Sep 2018 and need to be merged. Clear duplicate

1 Child Needing Removed- Based on Index searches of the various last names and related text search of Evard's Bartholomew genealogy book and Henry Sylvester Jacoby's Peter Jacoby and his descendants' book, 1 child needs to be removed from Bartholomew's children list. The child is Phillip - Jacoby-340. A note will be placed on the profiles of this individual, if after reviewing the chapter on Bartholomew's wife, nothing is found to support him staying connected to Bartholomew.

Have placed a large amount of information on the profile while I work on other Jacoby's. Major concern is that Bartholomew is NOT the son of Peter nor the sibling of Conrad, Henry, John, George or their sister. Will advise when I have finished and action needing to be taken.
Jacoby-339 and Jacoby-61 appear to represent the same person because: obvious duplicate
