Michaëlle Jean est née le 6 Sep 1957 à Port-au-Prince, Haïti. Elle avait 11 ans lorsqu'elle est venue au Canada en 1968 comme réfugié du Haïti. Le 27 Sep 2005, le Premier Ministre Paul Martin, l'a nommé la 27ième Gouverneur Général du Canada. Elle remplaça Adrienne Clarkson comme vice-reine. Elle fut la première Haïtienne Canadienne et noir à avoir ce poste. En 2011, elle fut succédé par David Johnston. Après son mandat comme 27iême Gouverneur Général, elle commença la Fondation de Michaëlle Jean pour soutenir les initiatives des jeunes. Elle fut la première femme et la 3ième Secrétaire-Général de l'Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie de 2015-2019. En 2017, elle vivait à Paris, France avec son époux Jean-Daniel Lafond et leur fille Marie-Éden Lafond.
Michaëlle was born 6 Sep 1957[1] in Port of Prince, Haiti.[2]
At eleven years old,[2] she came to Canada in 1968 as a Haitian refugee[1] with her parents as they fled the dictatorial regime of François Duvalier. She was raised in Thetford Mines, Québec.[1] When her parents divorced, she moved to Montréal, with her mother Luce and sister Nadege.[3] She married Jean-Daniel Lafond in 1992.
She became a journalist and broadcaster for Radio-Canada and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC).[1]
She started in her twenties and continued for ten years doing some charity work for victims of domestic violence.
She was appointed Canada's 27th Governor General on 27 Sep 2005 by then Prime Minister Paul Martin, replacing Adrienne Clarkson as vicereine. [1] She was the 1st Haitian Canadian and black person to hold that position.[1] She was the first Governor General of Canada to bring a child in the residence.
In 2011, she was succeeded by David Johnston.[1]
When her five year term expired in 2010, she served a four year term as Special Envoy for Haiti and United Nation Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.[1]
On 26 September, 2012, she became Queen's Privy Council for Canada.[1]
After her term as 27th Governor General, she started Michaëlle Jean Foundation to support youth art initiative.[3][4]
She was the 3rd Secretary-General of the Organization Internationale de la Francophonie, from 2015-2019.[1] She was the first woman to hold that position.
In 2017, she was living in Paris, France with her husband Jean-Daniel Lafond and their daughter Marie-Éden Lafond. She still owns a home in Ottawa.[3]
