Mary Ann Jeffery was born on 27 Jun 1858 at Kooringa in South Australia, eldest child of William Barrett Jeffrey (1838-1908) and Mary (Toy) Jeffrey (1836-1912) [1].
Mary Ann married Johannes Eisen (1854-1916) on 21 Jan 1880 at Emmaus, the Evangelical Lutheran Chapel in Eudunda, South Australia. [2]
Mary Ann and Johannes had two children
On May 9 1882, at age 23 and less than seven weeks after the birth of their second child, State Records show that Mary Ann was first admitted to the "Adelaide Lunatic Asylum". Admitted as Anna Maria Eisen, her name in her first marriage: “Anna Maria Eisen 23 Married of Brandy Creek near Point Pass Reason for admission: Puerperal mania."[citation needed].
Whilst Mary Ann (Anna Maria) was a patient, she was not visited by her husband Johannes Samuel Eisen. On Aug 21, she had a visit from an Aunt - Mrs E Hatt's or Katt's, Dressmaker of Kooringal. Notation is made of Letter from 21.8.82 Letter to 21.8.82. The only other record of a visitor was on Sep 11 Mrs D H Schutt - Cousin from Eudunda.
Mary was discharged on 16 Sep 1882, but then re-admitted the same day until 30 Oct 1882[citation needed].
Mary married James Richard Phillips (1863-1949) in 1882 [citation needed] and they had six children:
Mary died on 13 Apr 1945, and then was buried on 17 Apr 1945 at West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide, South Australia[3]. Mary Ann is buried in a Paupers Grave with 6 other persons. She was the six to be buried at the site [4].
