Biography

Early Life

James Phillips was born in the Colony of South Australia (1836-1900)

James Richard Phillips was born on 20 Feb 1887 , first son of James Phillips and Anna Jeffrey. ^[1]

James' birth residence is listed as 'Hundred of Schomburgk' which was part of the County of Burra within the Colony of South Australia, but was renamed to the 'Hundred of Maude' during World War I as the original name was "of enemy origin". ^[2]

James was enrolled at Waterloo School age 5 on 25 Jul 1892 but appeared absent for whole quarters during the first two years, then progressed from class J in 1895 at age 7/8 to IV in 1999 until leaving in Oct 1899 at age 12. ^[3] James was enrolled at the same time as his uncle Joseph Albert Phillips (1886-1966) who born a year earlier.

Family

James married Ethel Catherine Flower (1889-1979) on 15 Apr 1913 at the home of Ethel's parents (Joseph Flower (1843-1926) and ) at Stony Gap near Kooringa, South Australia. ^[4]

James and Ethel had 9 children together:

• Gladys Ruth: born 1923 in Riverton^[10]
• Lyall Richard: born 1925 in Saddleworth, which was another settlement on the road/railway to Burra^[11]
• Edwin Frank: born 1930 in Burra.
• Effie Jean: born 1933 in Burra.

Death & Legacy

James died aged 93 on 24 Nov 1979, and buried at Burra Cemetery in Burra, South Australia. ^{[12] [13]}
