Edwin Jourdain is Notable.

Edwin Jourdain was an attorney and one of the 29 founding members of the Niagara Movement.[1]

When Edwin Bush Jourdain was born on October 1, 1865, in New Bedford, Massachusetts, his father, Anthony, was 27 and his mother, Anna E Bush, was 29.[2] Great-great grandson of Cuff Kofi Slocum.[3] He grew up in an American family with African, Native American, and European ancestry. Growing up in the small city of New Bedford, Massachusetts, he witnessed the turbulence of life in the post civil-war era.

In 1905, Edwin assisted his friend and colleague W. E. B. DuBois(1868-1963), in the creation of the startling Niagara Movement. This movement centered on the insistence of equal civil rights for people of color in America, and around the world.[4]

Later in life, his involvement in the Niagara movement inspired his own son to follow suit;;Edwin B. Jourdain, Jr., while a student at Harvard in 1921, ignited a notable protest for student racial equality, followed soon after by Harvard alumni nationwide.[4]

He married Leonora Reeves Morse on September 30, 1890 at Providence, Rhode Island, United States[5]and they had at least six children together. Children:

  1. Henry Morse Jourdain 1894–
  2. male child Jourdain, b. and d. 23 June 1899, who only lived for 30 minutes
  3. Edwin Bush Jourdain 1900–1986
  4. Louise Jourdain 1903– after 1930 (father living with her in 1930)
  5. Leonora M. Jourdain 1904–1904
  6. William Jourdain Aug1906–Aug 31 1906

Unfortunately, his first wife passed away on April 27, 1911, leaving him with with several young children, the oldest of which was 16 or 17 years old.

He married Louisa Frances Stanley on 21 Apr 1921.[6]. They are not living together in the 1930 Census. Children:

  1. Shirley Jourdain 1922–2019 Find A Grave: Memorial #205392795
  2. Denise Hilda Jourdain 1922–1937 Find A Grave: Memorial #205393176
  3. Nelson J Jourdain 1924–1967

He died on October 10, 1938, in Elgin, Illinois, USA, at the age of 73, and was buried in his hometown.[7]

Research Notes

  • I'm looking for a photo of him. He's not in the 1905 Niagara group photo. It's possible he's in the 1907 group photo. There are many photos of his son Edwin Bush Jourdain, Jr, 1900-1986. I have checked the Library of Congress, ChroniclingAmerica newspapers, and Google image search.Weatherall-96 18:41, 22 February 2022 (UTC)

This is the correct Edwin who was part of the Niagara Movement. His son was a journalist, activist and first black alderman of Evanston, Illinois, so also a notable. Emma
