Biography

Mary Lawes was the daughter of Francis and Lydia Lawes of Norwich, Norfolk, England, who arrived at Salem, Massachusetts in 1637. [1] Francis Lawes, wife Lydia aged 49, and daughter Mary/Marie, and two servants, enrolled at Norwich for passage to New England on April 8, 1637. [2]

Mary married first, John Neale about 1641, as their first child was baptized at Salem in May, 1642. [3] Her husband John's origins are unknown/uncertain. He was made a Freeman at Salem on May 18, 1642. [4]

Mary Neale joined the First Church at Salem in 1647. [4]

Her father Francis wrote his will on November 6, 1665, leaving his son-in-law John Neale and wife Mary all his housing and lands in Salem until their deaths at which time it should pass to: [5]

  • grandson Jeremiah Neale
  • grandson Jonathan Neale
  • grandson Joseph Neale
In further bequests, Francis left:
  • to my five grandchildren - Jeremiah, Jonathan, Joseph, John and Lydia Neale L50 to be divided equally among them at L10 each
  • daughter Mary Neale household furnishings
  • grandson John - my weaving, tackling, looms, harnesses etc. provided he use them
  • my son-in-law John Neale and his wife Mary to be executors [5]

Her husband John died at Salem on May 12, 1672. [3]

In his will, written on May 3, 1672, he mentions his father-in-law Francis Lawes' previous will regarding the housing and lands. He also names: [4]

  • wife Mary
  • daughter Lydia Hart
  • sons Jeremiah, John, Joseph and Jonathan
  • grandson John Neale when he comes of age, Jeremiah's son
  • grandchildren Mary and Sarah Neale, Jeremiah's daughters
  • granddaughter Lydia, daughter of Lydia, when she comes of age, or if she not survive, to the next surviving children of my daughter Lydia
  • wife Mary and son Jeremiah to be executors [4]

Widow Mary Neale married second, Andrew Mansfield of Lynn on June 4, 1673, as his second wife. [6] [4]

Mary died on June 27, 1681. [6] [4]

Her son Lt. Jeremiah Neale was granted administration of the whatever estate property of Mary Mansfield, remained from the estate of her former husband John Neale. [7]

The inventory of the estate of Mary Mansfield, remaining from the estate of John Neale of which she was executor, was presented to the court on September 7, 1681. [7]

The court directed that the remaining estate should be divided among the children:

  • son Jeremiah, a double share
  • sons Jonathan and Joseph Neale
  • widow Anne Neale, for her children
  • the children of Lydia (Neale) Hart [4]

Her husband Andrew died at Lynn in 1692, aged 94. [6] [4]

He died before July 22, 1722, when his son Jeremiah was appointed administrator of his estate. [4]
  4. Lydia baptized on April 7, 1650/1; married Jonathan Hart in October, 1671. [3]; died by 1681. [4]
  5. Jonathan baptized on August 15, 1652 [3]; died young. [4]
  6. Mary baptized on March 14, 1655/6; died on July 6, 1658. [3] [4]
  7. Sarah born ___; died on July 22, 1658. [3] [4]
  8. Jonathan baptized on August 6, 1657; late in life he married widow Mary (Henfield) Marston at Salem on July 19, 1725 [3]; died by July 13, 1732, when his will was proved. [4]
  9. John baptized on January 24, 1657/8; married Anne Nichols by 1673 [3]; died on November 11, 1679. [4]
  10. Joseph born on March 14, 1659 [3]; married Judith Croad and removed to Pennsylvania where he died by 1718. [4]
