Biography

Margaret Leach immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Margaret Leach (twin) was baptized Sonning, Berkshire, England, 15 July 1621, [1] the daughter of Lawrence and Elizabeth Leach, who emigrated to Massachusetts during the Great Puritan Migration.

Research Notes

In his survey work about the family of Lawrence Leach, Robert Charles Anderson (1995) did not find traced of this daughter, Margaret, at New England.[2] In 2008, Henderson and Henderson reported her baptism, but nothing further.[3]

As they are surely different persons, do we want to treat this Margaret as the twin born to Lawrence Leach and Elizabeth or as the "Margaret Leach" who arrived New England in 1635, as mentioned by Fayette Phelps Leach? She is currently set up to be the latter, in which case she should be disassociated as Lawrence's daughter.

Henderson and Henderson (2008) discovered the 1621 English baptismal records of twins Margaret and Rachel Leach. Continuing information is known for Rachel, but not Margaret.

Fayette Phelps Leach (1924-1926) attributed a probable daughter named Margaret to Lawrence, but she was the woman age 22 in 1635 departing England aboard Susan & Ellin. (There indeed was such a Margaret Leach, see Hotten, 1874, 59.)
