Biography

Melchoir Leatherman died young.

Birth/Christening

Johann Melchior Leatherman was born on or about 23 April 1721 in Mattstall-Lembach, Wissembourg, Bas-Rhin, Alsace, Pfalz/Palatinate. He was christened on the same date at the Langesoultzbach Konfessionalen Kirch (Lutheran Church).[1]
According to Annette Kunselman Burgert's Eighteenth Century Emigrants from the Northern Alsace to America, Hans Theobald (or Diebold) Ledermann/Lederman and his wife Anna Maria/Maria Engler/Engel had eight (or nine) possible children, three of them baptized at Langesoultzbach as follows:[2]

  • Hans Daniel, baptized 6 November 1718
  • Johann Melchior, baptized 23 April 1721
  • Anna Catharina, baptized 17 May 1723

Travel / Immigration

Hans Dewalt Leatherman brought his family to America in 1727[3] on the ship James Goodwill from Rotterdam, by way of Falmouth, to Philadelphia, PA. They arrived in the Port of Philadelphia on 27 September 1727. The ship manifest shows 8 family members coming from Dehlingen, Alsace:

Anna Maria (Engler)
Hans Peter, 16
Catharina Barbara, 11
Hans Daniel, 9
Johann Melchior, 6
Anna Catharina, 4
Johann Nickel, 3
The passenger manifest further shows that they were heading to "Falkner Schwamm" (Falchner's Swamp, aka New Hanover), Pennsylvania.[4]

Death

Johann Melchior appears to have died in America some time after his family's arrival in September 1727. No source details have yet been found.
