Biography

Mary Frederica Lightbourn was born 25 December 1812 in the Bahamas to Joseph Lightbourn and Elizabeth "Eliza" Sayers Lightbourn.

She married Winer Bethel, son of Winer Bethel and Mary Roberts Bethel, 27 October 1835 at Christ Church, Nassau, Bahamas. The Bahama Argus noted: "Married, last evening, by Wm. Hield, Esq., J.P., Mr. Winer Bethel, Jr., to Mary Frederica Lightbourn, daughter of Joseph G. Lightbourn, Esq., late of Turks Island, deceased."

Winer and Mary had at least six children in Nassau - Euphemia Eliza Mary, Olivia Jane, Livingston Wellesley, Ida Euphemia, Frederica Sayers, and Malvina Ann Bethel. Not all of the children survived their infancies.

The Bethels emigrated to Key West, Florida, about 1847 and they were enumerated in the 1850 US Federal Census. Winer noted that he was a teacher. By the 1860 enumeration, he had become a naturalized US citizen (1852), an attorney in Monroe County, and, in 1858, was appointed Judge of Probate. He would later become the Mayor of Key West and a circuit judge.

Mary Frederica Lightbourn Bethel passed away 16 October 1880 in Key West, Florida. She was buried in the City Cemetery next to her husband in the Bethel family plot.
