Research Notes

Regarding the spelling of his name: Various records show either Fontaine or Fountain:
- The 1850 Census[1] shows Fountain, (but then it also shows Moppin, and that's not right.)
- The Story of Gabriel and Marie Maupin shows Fontaine.[4]
- FamilySearch[5] shows Fountain, but Fontaine is shown as an alternative birth name.
- FindAGrave shows Fontaine.[3]

Fountain/Fontaine Disambiguation

To add to the potential for confusion, Fontaine has a second cousin, Fountain Maupin who is also the son of a Thomas Maupin. To clarify:

Fontaine was born in Virginia, died in Tennessee, the son of Thomas, son of William, son of Daniel Maupin Sr.

Fountain was born in Kentucky, died in Missouri, the son of Thomas, son of Zachariah, son of Daniel Maupin Sr.

To reduce the potential for confusion, examine the residence and the parentage.
