Biography

Cornelius McGuire was born about 1781 in what was then Washington County, North Carolina. This area became part of Greene County in 1783, In 1796, the area became part of Tennessee. His father owned land here on Horse Creek of Nolichucky River. By 1808, the family was living in Jefferson County, TN.

Cornelius McGuire reportedly married Miriam (Marion?) Grace Leith (Leath/Leeth) 7 March 1802 in Jefferson Co., TN. No marriage record has been located. Miriam was a daughter of Ebenezer Leith and Nancy McKay. She was born c1790 (1860 Census). Their children included:

  1. Elizabeth McGuire, born c1803, died c1854 (Arkansas?)
  2. Ebenezer McGuire, born c1809, died 10 August 1864 Webster Co., MS; m. Francis Shackleford
  3. Angelina McGuire, born c1811, died 1871 Bibb Co., AL; m. Joseph Farrington 1 May 1831 Bibb Co., AL
  4. Martha McGuire, born c1815
  5. Tennessee D. McGuire (male), born c1819, died c1879 Desoto Co., MS; m. Elizabeth MNU; Co. K, 15th Reg MS Inf, CSA
  6. Leroy T. McGuire, born 17 May 1821, died 21 December 1887 Bibb Co., m. Louisa Marion Mayfield
  7. Pleasant Henderson McGuire (male), born c1822, died 5 May 1893 Coryell, TX; m. Amanda Dean; Co. H, 20th TX Inf., CSA.
  8. Charlotte H. McGuire, born Oct 1826, died after 1880; m. Henry Fancher 20 September 1844 Bibb Co., AL.

In the 1810 census, Cornelius was in Floyd, Floyd, Kentucky, United States.[1]

Cornelius (Neely) McGuire sold the land he inherited in 1817. By 1820, Cornelius and Marion had moved to Bedford County, Tennessee, along with his brother, William. In the 1820 census, Neely was in Bedford, Tennessee, United States.[2]

By 1830, Cornelius had moved again to Bibb County, Alabama. In the 1840 census, Neely was in Bibb, Alabama.[3] He died there, intestate, shortly before 24 January 1848.
