April 3, 1755
"Thirteen years her senior, Mark was born on March 1, 1701, of militant Irish ancestry in County Down.
...when Mark's indenture contract was fulfilled, he became nothing more than a tenant farmer on the great Carter Grant near the little community of Hopewell. Here he had met and married Mary Miller when she was 23.
Less than 10 months after their marriage in January 1737, a son was born to them and they named him William. He was followed by three daughters: Mary in 1739, Jane in 1742 and Frances in 1744. Each time they had expected another son and the anticipation became disappointment and the disappointment gradually gave way to fear as five years passed after the birth of Frances without more children. Mary prayed fervently that she might bear another son for her husband and, at last, so she did. Mark's pleasure was such that he named the infant boy after himself. Two years later had come a third son and he was named John. And now, on this bright April morning in 1755, another baby was born to them. 'His name', she said, glancing at her husband, 'is Benjamin.' Mark Kenton did not look up immediately. He tossed the wadded cloth into a wooden basin and pulled the quilt over her. Only then did he straighten to his full height of six feet, and his firm gaze took in both mother and daughter. 'His name,' he said quietly, 'is Simon.' Mary's smile wavered momentarily, then returned. 'His name is Simon'." (The Frontiersmen, by Allan Eckert, pgs 1-3)
