Place: Chambers (Singleton) Cemetery, Prairie, Fremont, IA
Notes
1850 - OH census: LICK 43 NEWARK shows Thomas Moody living with Thomas Bowles and his wife Caroline (Moody), Thomas' daughter. Also living with the Bowles' is their son George and Thomas' children Lucy [Elizabeth] and James Albert (shown as Albert). Thomas Bowles is a Cooper. Thomas Moody's occupation is shown as "none". There is no listing for Thomas Moody's wife Elizabeth Strother and it is probable she is deceased. At this time, Thomas' son Bruce is married and shown in the same census. Thomas' son, Thomas Mortimer, is living with Bruce. His son John William is married to Sarah Ann Deacon and is shown on the census in this same area as a farmer. The location or fate of Malinda Moody is unknown.
1860 IL census: Tazewell 132 Groveland. Shows Thomas Bolls (sp), Caroline [Moody], George, Emma, James, Clara, Charles, Thomas Moody, Mortimer Moody, Albert Moody, Joseph Strother. Thomas is shown as a farmer.
1870 IA census: Freemont 514 Ross Twp. Shows Thomas as landowner -- farmer -- and living with him are his son James Albert and James' wife, Isabel [Clem]. Next to them are living John DeBolt and his wife Lucy [Thomas' daughter] and their son Perry. Also a house worker named Amanda Fuchs age 26 born in IN.
WPA Graves Registration Program, Fremont County Grave Records - WPA, (Chambers - Singleton cemetery; Late 1930s), 71, Shows Thomas Moody; 11/8/1798 - 4/8/1879. Thomas' gravestone has the word "father" engraved on it. Other family members are also buried there, including James Albert, James' wife, and some of their children. Singleton Cemetery is now called Chambers Cemetery. It is located Pt. NW 1/4 NE 1/4, Sec. 13, Twp. 69 Range 41. Prairie Township, Fremont County, IA. It is now under the care of Prairie and Walnut Township Trustees. It is located northeast of Riverton, Iowa, off of Road J32 & J36. In 2004, I visited Chambers cemetery and found that all of the gravestones were fairly new and must have been replaced not too long ago. A 1971 transcription of the cemetery showed no record for Thomas, Sr. so his stone was gone at that time.
Howard Gill's records show the middle initial "M" -- probably Mortimer given his son's name.
Will of Thomas Moody dated May 15, 1869 shows heirs:
1. Mortimer - described as "of sound body but infirm mind" - to be cared for by Thomas M. Bowles and his wife Caroline (Moody). Thomas leaves 0 (already advanced) for this purpose and also funds to be provided from rents of his property. The funds to be forfeit if Mortimer was ill treated.
2. Bruce Moody - 0. already advanced
3. Lucy DeBolt - 5. already advanced
4. Asa Moody - grandson - to benefit of any additional monies.
5. James Albert received Thomas' property
James Albert Moody was named executor along with A.S. Roberts, Esq. Thomas signed the will. Henry Clem was one of the Appraisers of Thomas' estate in July 1879. Final statement of the estate was made by James Albert Moody in 1882. I believe that many pages of documentation were not copied by the court clerk in filling my request due to poor quality. Note that John William Moody is not named in Thomas' will.
From a letter written by Edith Collett to Mrs. Whitaker, dated March 6, 1927 (Ms. Whitaker is Alice Clem, daughter of John and Minnie Taggart Clem). Edith Phillips Collett had a hand-copy of Thomas' obituary done by her mother (no record of the newspaper but it appears it would be a Licking county publication):
"Died March 7, 1879 in Fremont county, Iowa, Mr. Thomas Moody for many years a resident of Licking county. He was a native of Northumberland county, Pennsylvania where he was born November 8, 1798 his parents being William and Mary Moody, who emigrated to this county in 1807 locating on the Bowling Green four miles east of Newark. William Moody died in 1828, from which time the subject of this sketch remained on the farm several years and in 1851 he removed to Tazewell county, Illinois, and in 1866 to Fremont county, Iowa where he died at the age of four score years, four months, 22 days." I have been unable to locate this obituary.
Edith Collett notes that she wrote to Sunbury, Northumberland, PA and received information from a Mrs. Amos Bloom who's first husband was Dr. William W. Moody. Edith could not identify the, if any, relationship of this Dr. Moody. However, from her notes, I believe he is the son of Robert Moody, Jr. a person unrelated to this Moody line.
A death notice appeared in the "Newark Weekly American" on 2 May 1879 stating that Thomas Moody died in Fremont county, IA, on 7 Mar 1879. Don't know if an obituary is in the paper.
