Biography

Jesse Murphy (1752~1827/8) of Henry Co., Virginia, Mercer Co., Kentucky, and Breckinridge Co., Kentucky. He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War.
Jesse Murphy was born 12 Jun 1752 in Pittsylvania, Virginia, the son of William Murphy and Martha Hodges according to his Revolutionary War Pension Application.
Jesse Murphy married Peggy approximately 1778 in Henry Co., Virginia. Together they had seven children:
  1. Jeremiah Murphy, born 1779/1780 in Virginia. He moved to Mercer Co., Kentucky with his father's family and then disappears from the records.
  2. William Murphy, born 1781 in Virginia. He married Elizabeth Davis, moved to Kentucky, and later settled in Illinois, where he raised a large family (see www.familysearch.org).
  3. Spencer Murphy, born abt 1784 in Henry Co., Virginia. He raised a family in Breckinridge Co., Kentucky, where he died in the Civil War Era.
  4. Elizabeth Murphy, born in Henry Co., Virginia. She married Isham Axton in Mercer Co., Kentucky. They settled in Posey Co., Indiana, where they raised a large family.
  5. John Murphy, born 1787/1788 in Henry Co., Virginia. He married Ann(a) Coulson in Mercer Co., Kentucky. He is unaccounted for following his marriage.
  6. Margaret "Peggy" Murphy, born in Henry Co., Virginia. She married William Axton in Mercer Co., Kentucky. They then settled in Posey Co., Indiana and raised a large family.
  7. Sarah Murphy, born in Henry Co., Virginia. She married Peter Nance in Mercer Co., Kentucky. Little is known concerning this family.
Jesse Murphy died 14 Aug 1818 in Breckinridge, Kentucky, United States.
Jesse Murphy enlisted under Captain John Peyton's Company, 3rd Virginia Regiment, commanded by Col. Thomas Marshall in 1777. After serving for six months, he became sick, and according to the pension application form, "his father Wm. Murphey furnished one Abram Myres in his room who served 18 months in the place of the said Jesse Murphey."
Following his Revolutionary War service, Jesse Murph(e)y may be found on the Personal Property Tax Lists of Henry Co., Virginia from the early 1780s through the year 1805. A year or two following his service, he married a woman named Margaret or "Peggy." They became the parents of seven children and lived on Matrimony Creek in Henry Co., Virginia, near the North Carolina state border during this time.
Jesse Murphy moved with his wife and children and grandchildren to Mercer Co., Kentucky in late 1805 or early 1806 [per the tax lists]. They lived there for a decade and are enumerated on the 1810 Census of that county. In the mid 1810s the family moved to Breckinridge Co., Kentucky. This would be the Revolutionary War Soldier's last stop. He lived there until his death in the late 1820s (he was last taxed in 1827, and it is believed that he died shortly after this date). When he applied for a pension in 1823 (Circuit Court Orders of Breckinridge Co., KY, dated 22 October 1823), he stated that he was 71 years old and further that he lived alone with his wife, who was aged 71 or 72 years. The pension application does not seem to have been recorded in Washington, D.C., as they have only his service record (see above).

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Jesse by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Jesse:
