The name Klein Zwarte Berg was the original name of the later Calvinia in Overberg. The name possibly referred to the small hill at the hot springs that had for a long time attracted people to this location.

Slave Owner

In 1816, the british authorities under Lord Charles Somerset instituted slave registers[5], per district, to regulate the ownership of slavery and prevent illegal enslavement of "Free blacks" and the Khoi/San.

The Swellendam slave register, Ledger N, Folio 1[6].

On April 1st 1824, Hendrik Nieuwenhuys moved to the Worcester (Tulbagh) district, and transferred his last slave to the Worcester register, Ledger N, Folio 29[7].

His 1827 inventory lists as first de Slaavin Christina van de Kaap. The slave Christina had been bought on 7th August 1819[8], which was a day before his second marriage. So this slave was meant as a help for his new wife. It looks like this last slave was sold, as the register is not recorded to have reverted to his widow.

Death

  • Date: 11 September 1827 (overleden op den 11 September 1827 in den ouderdom van 65 jaaren, 2 maanden en 7 dagen)[4][9]
  • Age at death: 65y 2m 7d (as per inventory record)[9]

Niewenhuysen-1 and Nieuwenhuijs-28 are not ready to be merged because: I don't believe they are the same persons. Refer the following SAG entries:

b3 Hendrik Johannes  1.6.1760 x Kaapstad 15.8.1790 Susanna Magdalena SWANEPOEL wed. v. Jacob Diederiks xx Swellendam 8.8.1819 Catharina Louisa SWANEPOEL

According to the SAG Registers, his entry is :

b3 Hendrik Johannes  1.6.1760 x Kaapstad 15.8.1790 Susanna Magdalena SWANEPOEL wed. v. Jacob Diederiks xx Swellendam 8.8.1819 Catharina Louisa SWANEPOEL

That means he is not the same person as Niewenhuysen-1. I will flag the pending merge as an "Unmerged Match"

Niewenhuysen-1 and Nieuwenhuijs-28 appear to represent the same person because: Seems like the same person - different wives, but could be wife 1 & wife 2

Futher research has to be done on his children, The childrens names are different on the inventory of their father and mother. Possible duplicates due to short names. I have marked the uncertain names with a (*) in the prefix.
