Biography

The daughter of William Osgood and Magdalene (Covert) Osgood, natives of Connecticut and New Jersey, respectively, Jane Osgood was born in Seneca County, New York, in 1817.

She married Henry Van Liew, residing in Seneca County, New York.

The 1850 U.S. Census recorded Henry Van Liew as head of a household in Ovid, Seneca County, New York. Household members were Henry Van Liew, age 37, a farmer; Jane Van Liew, 32; Lucy Van Liew, 11; Sarah Ann Van LIew, 9; Mary Van Liew, 7; William Van Liew, 4; and one-year-old twins James and John Van Liew. All were born in New York; the four older children all had attended school that year.[1]

The 1860 U.S. Census recorded the family in Lodi, Seneca County, New York. Household members were Henry Van Liew, 46 and a farmer; Jane Van Liew, 41; Lucy Van Liew, 21 and a "Com. S. teacher"; Sarah Van Liew, 19; Mary Van Liew, 17; James Van Liew, 11; John Van Liew, 11; Levina Van Liew, 7; and Solomon Wilson, 27, a farm laborer. All were born in Seneca County. Henry Van Liew reported $7000 real estate and $3500 personal estate.[2][3]

The 1880 U.S. Census again recorded them in Lodi.[4] The household consisted of Henry Van Lew, age 66, a farmer; wife Jane Van Lew, 61; son John Van Lew, 31, a farmer; and daughter Lovina Van Lew, 26. All were born in New York. The parents of Henry Van Lew were born in New Jersey. Jane had a father born in Connecticut and a mother born in New Jersey.

Jane Van Liew died on 5 September 1884 and is buried in West Lodi Cemetery in Lodi, New York.[5]
