About the Project

... ... ... is a member of the Motz Name Study Project.

The Motz Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Motz / Moats / Motes surnames. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for people with an interest in the Motz surname or the Moats and Motes variants.

These counts, as of 17 April 2023, give some indication of the prevalence of Motz surname variants:

Ancestry135,170242,179159,091

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual research pages focus on particular areas of research and provide a space for comments, discussion and collaboration. They can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (German Motz's), by time period (18th Century Motz's), or by topic (Motz Brick Walls, DNA, Occupations or Statistics). These focus areas may include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

How You Can Help

There are many ways you can help! Some items are general tasks you can work on and others are more focused areas which will have their own research pages you can join as well. If you would like to focus on an area not listed or want to start a new research page, please contact the Name Study Coordinator: David Motz for assistance. Thanks for your help!

Profile Improvement

Work to improve Motz/Moats/Motes profiles with primary sources and comprehensive, well-sourced biographies.

Categorization & Stickers

See Category: Stickers.
  • Add the category for the Motz Name Study to profiles, immediately above the == Biography == line.
    [[Category:Motz_Name_Study]]

-Or- for extra emphasis, add the name study sticker below the == Biography == line. (The sticker automatically includes the category as well.) (See Template:One_Name_Study.)
This profile is part of the Motz Name Study.

yDNA Testing

If you are a male with a Motz/Moats/Motes surname and haven't already, please consider testing your yDNA so that we can all have a better understanding of our heritage and possibly make new discoveries.

Brick Walls - Ancestor Research

Research and create sourced ancestor profiles to break down Motz "brick walls". For the purposes of this study, a "brick wall" is defined as a profile that does not have a connected father profile. Brick walls are also sometimes referred to as EKA (Earliest Known Ancestor), or Founder or Head of Line or Lineage. See Motz ONS Brick Walls for a list of known Motz brick wall profiles.
When working on brick walls for this name study you can:
  • Add the brick wall sticker to the profile. (See Template:Nonmigrating_Ancestor.)

    |tooltip=Brick Wall}}
  • Add a descendant sticker on your own profile. Substitue in your own earliest known ancestor ID, name, and other information. (See Template:Descendant.)

Descendancy Research

Descendancy research is especially helpful when focused on the earliest known profile of a yDNA tester because the yDNA connection will appear on every male descendant of that ancestor.

Connecting Profiles

Add new profiles for all the "Unconnected" Motz/Moats/Motes profiles in order to connect them to the global tree. (For information on connecting profiles, see the Connectors Project.)
  • See the unconnected MOTZ profiles
  • See the unconnected MOATS profiles
  • See the unconnected MOTES profiles
A profile is said to be "Unconnected" if it is not connected to the global WikiTree by ancestry, descent or marriage. A profile can be connected to a number of profiles and still be considered "unconnected" to the global tree. An unconnected profile might not be a brick wall, and a brick wall profile might not be unconnected. You can connect Motz profiles to the global tree by adding profiles for ancestors, descendants, and spouses.
A profile that is "connected" will display a "Bacon box" (Are you six degrees from Kevin Bacon? lol) at the bottom of the profile, highlighting the degrees of connection to various individuals, like this:
David is 21 degrees from Katherine Swynford, 17 degrees from Renée Breau, 17 degrees from Jane Coles, 34 degrees from Gothfraid Of Lochlann, 32 degrees from Ocaan Ro, 12 degrees from Michele Sauvagie, 18 degrees from Catherine Strutt, 17 degrees from John Thorpe, 42 degrees from Charibert von Neustria, 25 degrees from Katharina von Pfannberg and 24 degrees from our Member of the Week, Betsy Ko on our single family tree.

I would like to join the Motz Name Study. Today I requested military records for a couple of Motz family members and I would be happy to share them with the group, if I receive them. Thanks to all for your help!

Hi! I created the companion category for your name study (Category:Moats Name Study). Feel free to edit it. The default for the template is to add the main category, but you can add a line to have a different category. See the ONS template page for details. Give me a holler if you have any questions about categorization.

I also created a redirect, so Project:Moats (the link for the button from the Moats surname page) brings you to this page.

Cheers, Liz

P.S. if you wanted to delete this comment, that's fine. It would make the previous post more visible.

My maternal grandfather was a descendant of Tevault Moats and I am gathering family archives to share. It seems everyone in the U.S. cannot find documentations further back than Tevault.
