John J. Shriver was born May 11, 1836, in Morgan County, Ohio, the son of John Shriver and Lovicia Smith, and moved with his family to Iowa when he was only four years old. His father, John Jasper Shriver, had purchased a claim of 320 acres of land in Cedar County.
In 1869, in Cedar County, Iowa, Shriver was united in marriage with Annabella Montgomery, a native of Canada, who came to Iowa in 1867[1].
Shriver and his family moved to the Churdan, Greene county, Iowa, area in 1879 from Cedar county. Shriver purchased 320 acres of land of Albert Head's in Section 15, Highland Township. The land was still basically prairie and he had to break it. He built a little house on his homestead that measured approximately sixteen by twenty feet. As the years passed a more modern residence was constructed and many substantial improvements were placed upon his farm.
Shriver eventually sold 160 acres of the original homestead but later bought from John Hillis, a similar tract in section 22 of the same township, leaving him again with 320 acres of land.
Shriver eventually turned over the land to his sons and retired, dying on January 9, 1917. His obituary was published January 17, 1917, in the Jefferson Bee in Jefferson, Iowa[2].
Churdan
John J. Shriver was born in Morgan county, Ohio, May 11, 1836, and died at his home in Churdan about 6 o'clock Tuesday morning, January 9, 1917, aged 80 years, 7 months and 28 days. When six months of age he moved with his parents to Cherry Valley, Illinois, and in 1840 came to Cedar county, Iowa, where he was married to Annabella Montgomery of Perth, Canada. They came to Greene county, Iowa, in 1879, where he lived on the farm until 1910 when he moved to Churdan and spent the remaining days in ease and comfort, until last April when he was afflicted with hardening of the arteries. He was able to ride up town until the last of September after which he was confined to his home and the last three months confied to his chair in which he died, very suddenly, which was a great shock to his children and so unexpected. he was conscious until the end, able to walk with assistance to the very last and although loath to leave his friends on account of his affliction expressed the desire many times to go. Just the afternoon before wished to go in the morning, which he did. He was a patient sufferer and thanked his children for every little thing done for him and blessed God and prayed for a young life that was despaired of to be spared and the Lord take him. He mourned for his wife, who preceded him June 20, 1915, and the last few days could see her in the room. The funeral services were held Thursday Jan. 11, at 2:30 at the M.E. church conducted by the pastor, Rev. Andrew assisted by Rev. Gregg, of the Presbyterian church, and by Rev. Yearnd, of the Baptist church. The remains were laid to rest in the beautiful Churdan cemetery. Seven children are left to mourn his loss. Clarence G., Mrs. Mary Peacock, Mrs. Olive Stewart of Churdan; Mrs. Florence Nutt and Jessie P. of Des Moines; Adella L. and Clyde E. at home. Clinton D. was drowned in Lake Washington, Washington, July 26, 1907, and Maud M., died April 9, 1885.
