Stories/Additional Information According to the 1850 and 1860 census, Anthony was a farmer. His older sons were farm laborers, and his son George was a blacksmith at age 21. Anthony’s estate value was $450 in 1850. Anthony’s family’s real estate value was $2,000, and his personal estate value was $4,000 in 1860. Daughter Rachel lived with her family and attended school within the year at age 12 in Greenup County, Kentucky. Based on the fact that Anthony and Phebe had a child born in Virginia/West Virginia in 1843, and all subsequent children, born 1844 and later were born in Kentucky, they must have migrated to Kentucky around that time. The 1850 census puts that migration date earlier (around 1840), based on the fact that children born 1840 and after were born in Kentucky. Phebe’s name appears to be spelled "Pheba" on the 1850 census. Phoebe Smith’s death notice in The Portsmouth Times on August 5, 1893, says: "On Friday of last week, Mrs. Phoebe Smith, of Greenup County Kentucky, died from paralysis at her grandson’s home near Bennett’s Chapel." The Portsmouth Times death notice for Anthony Smith, Jr. on August 9, 1942, says he was the son of Anthony and Phoebe Collins Smith, which is proof that her maiden name was Collins. Various unconfirmed online sources list Phoebe’s parents as Isaac Sanson Collins and Rachel Cunningham of West Virginia. 1850, 1860 Census; Anthony Smith Jr. Death Notice, Portsmouth Times Aug. 9, 1942.

Thanks so much, Marilyn, for the information. I have seen the Ritchie County history book before, but I must not have seen the Phebe Collins/Anthony Smith connection before. And since they don't cite a source, I guess I took it with a grain of salt. I do know that Phebe Collins did marry Anthony Smith in Lewis County, WV. I've seen the record of their marriage in WV records, and I found Phebe's obituary. I've attached the information I have on both Anthony and Phebe. I do not know where either of them is buried; however, their daughter Rachel is buried in the Friendship Church Cemetery in Scioto County, Ohio, so it may be that they're buried there, too, although that's a long shot. I would also like to know where they are buried. Do you know anything about the parentage of Anthony Smith? Some notes from my great-grandmother suggested that his father may have been a Jacob Smith (which makes sense, considering that their first son is also named Jacob), but I haven't found any proof of that. Are you a descendant of this family, as well?

Unfortunately, the obit is pretty basic. I have not found Phoebe and Anthony in any other censuses. They should appear in 1880, but I have yet to find them on that one. And I'm also not sure who she was living with at the time of her death, although the obit states "at the home of her grandson." I just don't know which grandson it was (and honestly, I don't even know who all her grandsons were). I'll have to keep looking. I'll let you know if I find anything. I need to do more research on the children; I haven't looked into them much, since I was mostly focused on the direct line so far. I'm also not sure about America Smith, I have a marriage announcement from Portsmouth, Ohio, for an America Smith to Leander Brown in 1880, and I assumed it was the same America Smith, since it's a fairly unusual first name, but I just assumed on that one; it could well be that the information you have is correct for her marriage. The birth dates in your record seem to line up correctly, so I may have made a wrong assumption on that one. I actually just added that to my information today after running across that marriage announcement again, so it could indeed be wrong. I would love to see the Collins family information you have, that sounds like a genealogical treasure! Anything you're willing to share would be much appreciated. Likewise, I'm glad to share with you anything else I find, too. Thanks again, Chris

Collins-13873 and Smith-119727 appear to represent the same person because: This is same person
Collins-13873 and Collins-11393 appear to represent the same person because: This is same person
Smith-119727 and Collins-13873 appear to represent the same person because: These two profiles look a lot like they're for the same person. Are they? If yes, please agree to merge them. It looks like Collins is more likely her correct last name at birth. If they're not the same person, please add enough information to each profile to make that clear, and reject the merge. Thanks!
