Peppett Name Origins
"Recorded as Pepys, Pepis, Pepin, Peaple, People, Pepall, Pepil, Pippin, Peppiatt, Peppett, Pippett, Pipet, Pipitt and others, this is a surname of French origins. It is derived from the pre7th century Old French personal names "Pepis or Pepin", introduced into England by the Normans after the Conquest of 1066, or possibly as well at the time of Hugunots in the 16th and 17th centuries, as refugee name. The personal name is of uncertain origin, but may have originally been a personal name Pep or Pip meaning awe-inspiring. The personal name was borne by several Frankish Kings, most notable Pepin le Bref, father of Charlemagne, and the name remained popular throughout the Middle Ages. The name development includes Richard Pepis of Cambridge in 1273, Hawis Pepell of Yorkshire in 1301 and Robert Pepit at St Mary Aldermary, in the city of London in 1624. Jeremiah Peaple and Clara Perry married on March 25th 1863, and of Septimus People and Hannah Mattock on March 29th 1863, both at St. Pancras, Old Church. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Ralph Henry Pipin, which was dated 1086, in the Domesday Book of Leicestershire, during the reign of King William 1st, known as "The Conqueror", 1066 - 1087. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Publications
A book with the title 'Descendants of Robert Poppet' (author Peter Skellon) was a basis for this Study. The common ancestor was Robert Poppitt, born in about 1674 in Shrewsbury (the surname was variously recorded as Poppet, Poppit, Poppitt, etc.)
A significant person was Joseph Poppitt, born in 1793 in Hyssington. Montgomeryshire (although other records suggest he may have been born in Shropshire or Huntington, Herefordshire) He had nineteen children and hundreds of descendants.
An important researcher was John Sydney Poppitt (1900 - 2004), born in Newport. He wrote the book "My family tree by J S Poppitt" which has been a basis for this study.
Background research on the Black country has been done by Nick Moss in his book 'Ironopolis - standing up for Wolverhampton' book by Nicholas Moss published 2018 Caxton, in particular defining the ‘Original Black Country’ by an 'analytical, evidence-based approach'. Many Poppitts have Black Country origins.

- Granville Poppitt 1903-1985 Swindon footballer, cricket captain, bowler and hotelier. Granville Poppitt was in the Swindon Town squad and team photo in the 1923-24 season [219]. Granville was a bowler for Swindon North End and Wiltshire. For example, he played in a team of three with Walter Barnett and Bill Winchcombe for Wiltshire v Warwickshire in 1956 (although the game was lost 18-22). By 1958, Granville had made 26 Middleton Cup appearances for Wiltshire (the most by any player at the time [220]). Granville was clearly a talented all round sportsman.

Syd also scored in the decisive 3-2 Stoke win v Manchester United (25 May 1940) and played in a friendly match Stoke 3 v.
