KENTUCKY

  • "REMEMBER the RAISIN"
  • Kentucky supplied men to help both Indiana Territory, and Michigan Territory,

Kentucky involvement in the War of 1812 totaled 20,239 men (11,882 infantry men, 8,285 cavalry men, and 72 men to miscellaneous troops). [1] Kentucky did not have to defend any fortifications, however its troops campaigned actively against the enemy (British, or the Indians helping the British). Kentucky sustained more casualities than all other states combined. [2]

Governor of Indiana Territory and future president of the USA, William Henry Harrison, asked for military assistance from neighboring Kentucky. He was appointed brigadier general of the Kentucky Militia Aug 22, 1811. 25,010 Kentuckians fought in this war. The majority ( 5/ 6 men of military age) fought the British and/or the Indians; they were in 36 regiments, four battalions, and twelve independent companies.

Hi Mary!

I have been sprucing up Brigadier General John Payne's profile page, formatting the bio and adding inline sources as part of my duties as a PIP Voyager.

At first I questioned whether this John Payne was in fact a Brig Gen, as one can see in my Research Notes on the General's profile page. When I adopted this profile the bio was not referencing any sources re his military, so that is what I am attempting to do. Your list above doesn't include the General so I wanted to provide a source that I am sure you have read many times, Kentucky Troops in the War of 1812 pub'd by the Kentucky Historical Society's Kentucky Troops in the War of 1812. John Payne is listed on page 53 of the Register of the Kentucky State HIstorical Society and page 6 in A.C. Quisenberry's Journal Article under Miltia and Volunteers/General Officers as one of the Brig Generals.

There is also listed a Captain John Payne company of Kentucky Light Dragoons on page 19, organized on August 7, 1813, that was attached to Colonel Johnson's regiment, but not part of it. This entry in the journal article puzzles me.

There are several other references to General John Payne. After reading your page here, which I really like, I was wondering what type of proof do you need to add him to your page. If not, perhaps you could give me some advice about this profile.

By the way I am glad to see one of my 3rd great grandfathers on your page here, Christley Miller, Kentucky Spy!

Anyway, thank you for providing this page...I love Kentucky, my grandpa, among others, were all born in Cloverport, Kentucky and surrounding areas of Hardinsburg.

Thanks for your time and I appreciate it!

Regards, Scott Lee
