William Speed was born in 1885, in Sandhurst, Colony of Victoria, Australia, the son of Edwin Speed and his wife Emily Miller.[1] Please note: the Sandhurst of 1885 is NOT the Sandhurst on modern (2020s) maps. From 1863 until 1891 the official name for what is now Bendigo was City of Sandhurst, County of Bendigo. After 1891 Sandhurst reverted to its previous name of Bendigo.[2]
