Augustus was born in 1830 in Cayuga County, New York. He ws the son of Benjamin Spinning and Mary Woodworth.
His father wrote his will on 23 Jan 1843,[1] naming his wife Mary M. Spinning, sons Augustus and William M. and his father John Spinning. His wife and sons were to care for his three daughters. In his will he bequeathed unto son Augustus Spinning his heirs and assigns all that messuage or tenement situated and being in town of Cato in County of Cayuga the undivided half of fifty acres land on lot thirty three Brutus now Cato at the marriage or death of his mother Mary M Spinning by his paying his three sisters fifty dollars each at age of eighteen if said Augustus is in possession of said land and if either of said sisters should die before they arrive at that age then it to be divided among sister or sisters that is living and if it necessary said Augustus is to pay in the amount of fifty dollars to John Spinning for support of said John.
Mary M. Spinning, widow of Benjamin Spinning, petitioned Cayuga County court for probate of Benjamin's will[1] on 14 Nov 1844. Her children Augustus, Charlotte, William, Mary and Sarah were all minors.
In 1850 he was living in Cato, Cayuga, New York.[2] The household included Mary Spinning age 47, Augustus Spinning age 20, Mary Spinning age 13, William Spinning age 12, and Sarah Spinning age 10, all born in New York. Mary was a farmer. Augustus was a farmer. The home was in lot 33 as depicted on Northern Cayuga County Maps, which also show lot locations for his later land transactions.
In 1855 he was living in Cato, Cayuga, New York.[3] The household included Mary M Spinning age 52, son Augustus W Spinning age 25, son Wm M Spinning age 16, daughter Mary F Spinning age 18, daughter Sarah C Spinning age 14. Mary was born in Madison County. The children were all born in Cayuga County.
On 10 Apr 1857 Augustus W Spinning of the town of Cato purchased land totaling 41 acres in the town of Cato lot 33 from John Bulhand and his wife Maria of the town of Elbridge, Onondaga County, New York for $1450.[4] The land was bounded on the south by land owned by Benjamin Spinning, deceased, west by Amon Langworthy, north by Jacob D Putnam, and east by Anna Squires, by the road from Cato 4 Corners (Meridian) to the float bridge.
In 1860 he was living in Town of Cato, Cayuga, New York.[5] The household included Augustus W Spinning age 30, Sarah A Spinning age 23, Mary A Spinning age 4 and Ester M Spinning age 2, all born in New York. Augustus was a farmer. His mother and siblings lived next door.
On 15 Sep 1860 William Burk and Lydia Ann his wife sold 6 acres in the south east corner of lot 21 in the town of Cato to Augustus W Spinning and William M Spinning, also of Cato, for $350.[6]
On 24 Sep 1860 Augustus Spinning and Sarah Ann his wife of the town of Cato sold lot 33 in the town of Cato to Squire E Hooper of the town of Cato for $300.[7] The parcel was two rods wide, adjoining lands formerly owned by David Sedman, by the Jordan Plank Road, by lands owned by Anna Squire, and by the Miller Lot.
On 18 May 1861 Amon Langworthy of the town of Cato conveyed 4 acres beginning at the southeast corner of his land in lot 33 in the town of Cato to Augustus W Spinning and William M Spinning of Cato for $1.[8]
On 18 May 1861 Augustus W Spinning and Sarah his wife of Cato and William M Spinning of Cato conveyed 3 acres in lot 21 in the town of Cato to Amon Langworthy of Cato for $1.[9] The land was described as beginning at the northwest corner of land occupied by Mary Spinning then west to S Leland then north to land owned by Amon Langworthy.
He registered for the Civil War draft in Cato, New York.[10]
In 1865 he was living in Cato, Cayuga, New York.[11] The household included A W Spinning age 35, wife T A Spinning age 29, son M A Spinning age 9, daughter E M Spinning age 7, daughter Sarah Spinning age 5, sister M F Spinning age 28, and brother W M Spinning age 26. Augustus was a farmer. His wife was born in Onondaga County, everyone else was born in Cayuga County. William was a farmer.
On 5 Apr 1866 Augustus W Spinning and Sarah his wife and William M Spinning of Cato sold one half acre in lot 33 in Cato to Corydon S Marble of Cato for $100.[12]
On 15 Jul 1867 William M Spinning of Cato sold 90 acres in lot 33 in the town of Cato (formerly Brutus) to Augustus W Spinning of Cato for $3000, subject to payment of a mortgage.[13] One parcel was bounded by Cross Lake, Josiah Converse Jr., the States 100 Acres, Anna Squires and the highway. Another parcel was bounded by Corydon Marble, the highway, John Leland, Salmon Leland, Amon Langworthy, Richard Fuller, Anna Squires.
He had a farm of 180 acres in the town of Cato.[14][15]
In 1870 he was living in Cato, Cayuga County, New York.[16] The household included Augustus Spinning age 40, Sarah A Spinning age 34, Mary A Spinning age 14, Esther M Spinning age 12, Sarah A Spinning age 10 and William Fairchild age 25, all born in New York. Augustus was a farmer. William was working on the farm. Giles Burk and his wife Mary lived next door along with Augustus' brother William. Both Giles and William were working on the farm.
In 1875 he was living in Cato, Cayuga County, New York.[17] The household included Augustus Spinning age 47, wife Sarah Spinning age 39, daughter Mary Spinning age 19 daughter Addie Spinning age 18, son William Spinning age 5, and Joseph Buckman age 21. Augustus, Mary, Addie and William were born in Cayuga County. Sarah was born in Onondaga County. Joseph Buckman was born in Germany. Augustus was farming. Joseph was working on the farm. Mary was a college student. Brother William Spinning lived next door.
In 1880 he was living in Cato, Cayuga, New York.[18] The household included Augustus Spinning age 50, wife Sarah A Spinning age 42, daughter Sarah A Spinning age 20, son William A Spinning age 9, George Blanchard age 22 and Minnie Wise age 24, all born in New York. Augustus was a farmer. George and Minnie were servants.
In 1892 he was living in Cato, Cayuga, New York.[19] The household included Augustus Spinning age 62, wife Sarah A Spinning age 57, daughter Mary A Spinning age 35, son William A Spinning age 22. Augustus was a farmer.
In 1900 he was living in Cato, Cayuga, New York.[20] The household included Augustus Spinning age 71, wife Sarah A Spinning age 66, son William A Spinning age 30, and transient William Knapp age 76, all born in New York. Augustus was a farmer. Son William worked on the farm.
In 1905 he was living in Cato, Cayuga, New York.[21] The household included Augustus Spinning age 75, wife Sarah A Spinning age 70, son William A Spinning age 35 and daughter Mary A Spinning age 34. Augustus and William were working on the farm. Sarah and Mary were doing housework.
He died 16 Aug 1908 in Cato, Cayuga County, New York.[22]
Wife's name was Sarah Lamphere, based on daughter Mary's marriage.[23] It is possible the name may have been Lamphier.
