Biography

Thomas Staunton married Katherine a daughter of Walter Washington of Radway. They had a son Thomas, who married Elizabeth Cookes of Pinley Abbey and their son Thomas did not have children and ended the line. Their daughter Alice married John Wagstaffe of Tachbrooke. Alice and John had a son Sir Thomas Wagstaffe, who's dau. Frances Wagstaffe m. Sir Edward Bagot, and was grandmother of the first Lord Bagot.[1]

Marriage

Thomas Staunthon married Katherine Washington 30 Jul 1616 in Holy Trinity Church, Stratford-On-Avon, Warwickshire, England.[2][3][4]

Issue:

  1. Thomas Stanton b. 1617 - this implies that this is a different Thomas than the emigree since he still lived in England and had a son who followed him to Oxford.[5]
  2. Alice Stanton b. 28 Aug 1619

The Burke's lineage doesn't match that of Thomas Staunton, emigree and founder of Hartford who didn't marry someone named Elizabeth Cookes, he married Ann Lord in Connecticut and the first name of his mother was not noted.

Grandchildren according to Alice's will (alive in 1642):[6]

Death & Burial

He is supposedly buried in Holy Trinity Churchyard in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, England. [7]

Stanton-2284 and Stanton-103 appear to represent the same person because: perhaps intended as same person

According to this Thomas Stanton, Hartford Settler, was indeed the son of Katherine Washington and Thomas Staunton Gentleman.

Hi Holly,

Thank you for supporting WikiTree.

From the profile of Thomas Stanton (abt.1615-1677), "Thomas Stanton of Connecticut is commonly stated to have been the son of Thomas Stanton of Wolverton, Warwickshire, England by his wife Katherine Washington. This has been definitively disproved." The profile cites Eugene Cole Zubrinsky, "Thomas1 Stanton of Connecticut and the Longbridge Tradition, An Old Dogma's Demise (Again)." The American Genealogist, Vol. 81, No. 1, January 2006.</ref>[p. 48].

To your 2020 post, above. I was able to load the linked page (wayback machine) and enough of the navigation to learn that the reference is to the internet family file of a Donna Marie Wheeler Schumacher. The entry about Thomas Stanton III includes this note:

Our recording of Thomas' ancestors was once thought to be incorrect based on the following ... In "The American Genealogists" Volume XIV, D. L. Jacobus, New Haven, Conn. 1937, is an article by Clarence Almon Torrey, PH. B of Dorchester, Mass - The Stanton-Washington Ancestry". Almon consulted published works on Oxford students and John Burke's "A Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Commoners of Great Britain and Ireland". From these records "it is evident that Thomas Stanton, son of Thomas and Katherine (Washington) Stanton, remained in England; that he entered Oxford, aged 17 years, in 1634; that he married Elizabeth Cookes and had a son Thomas, who was 17 in 1664, when he was admitted to Oxford."

The compiler then goes on to say, "But we believed the ancestry was correct according to the following ... Anna Chesebrough Wildey, page 535, sources the pedigree of Thomas Stanton's ancestors from page 277 of the "Visitation of the County of Warwick in 1619, Taken by William Camden Clarendieux, King of Arms; Harleian Miscellany 55 - 1167", Edited by John Fetherstone, F. S. A.; London: 1877; Vol. XII of "Harleian Miscellany Soc'y", Est. 1869. This information was provided her by Dr. George Dallas Stanton of Stonington." And yet more.

I searched the page and found there was not reference to either Zubrinsky or 2006.

If you feel the works by Zubrinsky overlook important historical records or analysis, please consider further collaboration about Zubrinsky's material, perhaps on G2G.

Thank you again for supporting WikiTee. --Gene
