Note

Note: Johannes Steinseifer, who lived in Eisern a few miles southeast of Siegen, received a letter in 1749 from Johann Henrich Hoffman, a former resident of Eisern who had moved to America in 1743, specifically to Doppel Dab (Double Top?) in Orange County, Virginia. Hoffman requested that Steinseifer bring the balance of money due to him from the sale of goods to Heinrich Jung of Eisern.
We have knowledge of this letter because Heinrich Jung wished to have it on record that he was paying the money which he owed. He did not want to be dunned again in case the money failed to reach Hoffman. A copy of the letter was made and filed at an official office (Steinseifer did not want to turn in the letter). A receipt was issued to Jung for his records. The date of this letter was 10 May 1749.
Almost immediately, Steinseifer left for America since he arrived in Philadelphia on the ship Patience the following September 19.
Information about Johannes Steinseifer and his family has been found in the church books in Germany. He was born 6 July 1698 at Eiserfeld (next door to Eisern), the third son of Johann Steinseifer and Anna Gehla Grebe. On 3 Aug 1723 he married Elisabeth Schuster of Eisern. They lived in Eisern and had nine children baptized in the parish of Rödgen. From the church records:
Johannes Henrich, * 1 Oct 1724
Elisabeth, * 24 Nov 1726 (died 1727)
Johann Heinrich, * 18 Jul 1728
Elisabeth, * 17 Jan 1734
Agnes Catharina, * 26 Aug 1736
Henricus, * 2 Aug 1739
Maria Agnesa, * 14 Jan 1742
Johannes, * 2 Feb 1744
Anna Margaretha, * 7 Apr 1748
The oldest son, age 25, did not come with the parents but came in 1753. The father wrote his will 2 Apr 1754 and it was probated 21 Jul 1757. The four sons are named as John, the Elder; Henereous; John, the Younger; and Henry. John Hoffman and John Towles were witnesses to the will.
Neighbors were Michael Smith, John Kains, Major William Roan, Henry Hoffman, and Jacob Manspile. It may be of interest that the maiden name of Henry Hoffman's wife was Schuster, the same as the maiden name of John Steinseifer's wife. However, the given names of the two Schuster men were different so perhaps the wives were cousins.
Velvet told us here that Agnes Catherine married Edward Smith in the late 1750s.

Actually the ones who came to Madison were from Eisern, a town a few miles south of Siegen. Steinseifer brought the proceeds of the sale of John Hoffman's property in Eisern to him in what was then Culpeper county. He had moved from Fauquier to the Robinson River valley when he married Maria Sabina Folg. Hoffman sold a piece of his property to Steinseifer. There are Steinseifer descendants still living in Freudenberg, another suburb of Siegen. buy no Steinciphers still live in Eisern. One reason people thought that Steinseifer was from Siegen was that there was no church in Eisern, so those people from there, including Steinseifer, Hoffman, and Tillman Weaver, attended church at Martini Kirche in Siegen. The distance was about 4 miles from Eisern to the Martini Kirche which is located at the south end of the old walled city. The church sits above portions of the old wall that still exist. The Lower Castle is built on land that abuts the church yard. The preceding information was provided to us by Jorg Becker of Eisern, who has studied in the US and is a life member of The Germanna Foundation. Thom
Thank you for the information; I do show my direct ancester, John Henry (Johannes Heinrich) being from Eisern, Nassau-Siegen. His ancestors were from Oberschelden and Seelbach, ie Christian Steinsifer was on the voter lists in 1636 and 1646 for Oberschelden (gggrandfather of John Henry). The records I've seen regarding marriages and baptisms were from the Parish of Rodgen in Nassau-Siegen; was the name of the church Martini? FYI, my descent is thru John Henry, Joseph Marion, Daniel, Martin Luther, Vardman Luther, Samuel Walter Stonecipher. My grandmother was Vivian Edith Stonecipher. These are Morgan County, TN, Stoneciphers, via NC via Virginia. Angela
Harry Curtis Stonecipher was the son of Harry Sheldon Stonecipher and Jennie Mae Settles of Scott County, TN. Harry Sheldon's parents were Ira Curtis Stonecipher and Lillie Lee Goad, also of Scott County. Ira Curtis Stoneciper parents were Jessie E. Stonecipher and Annis Ellis. Jessie E. was born in Union County, Ohio; his parents were Curtis B. Stonecipher and Mary Ann Brown of Morgan County, TN and Marion County, Illinois; Curtis' parents were Thomas Ezra Stonecipher and Elender Goddard of Ashe County, NC and Morgan County, TN. Thomas was the son of Ezra B. Stonecipher and Susannah Curtis; Ezra being the son of revolutionary war solder Joseph Marion Stonecipher and Salome Unknown. Joseph was the son of Johannes Henrich (John Henry) who immigrated to Virginia from Germany. Angela AngelaMeadows3@@aol.com
According to Stonecipher geneology, not confirmed info by me, Edward Smith was born abt. 1720 in Maryland and died 1807, Carter County, Tenn. (Will dated 11 Feb 1807; Proved 15 April 1807. He married Agnes Catharina Steinsiffer in Culpepper County, VA, 1757; she died in 1795, either Washington or Carter County, Tennessee. Edward Smith received North Carolina land grants in then Washington County in 1783. Agnes Catharina being the daughter of Johannes Stinecypher and Elizabeth Schuster. I show 10 children for them to include Nicholas Smith who married Susanna Bowman and Sarah Smith who married John Bowman. This does not clear up whether this Edward Smith was of Germanic origin or not, given the large population of German's in the now Frederick, Maryland area; to include another branch of the Steinsiffer's. Angela
Johannes Steinseifer wrote his will <./will1.html> on 2 April 1754 and it was probated on 21 July 1757 in Culpeper County, Virginia. (The American colonies adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1752.) In it he mentions his wife "Elezebeth Stinsyfer" and his four sons: "John Stinisyfer Elder," "Henerecus Stinisyfer," "John Stinisyfer Younger," and "Henry Stinesyfer;" and his four remaining daughters, though not by name. We assume, therefore, they were all alive in 1754. He signs the will "John Stinesyfer." It was witnessed by "Johannes Hoffman" and "John Towles."

Burial

German Reformed Church Cem., , Culpeper Co., VA, US

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Johannes by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Johannes:

Steinseiffer-23 and Stinesfer-1 appear to represent the same person because: Same birth and death information. Same son Henricus.

I am a descendant as I am sure many others are who have contributed to this page. I have not found any resource that gives Mark as his middle name. Can somebody tell me where that came from?
