Marcus Stokes was a Virginia colonist.

Marcus Stokes is the son of Sylvanus Stokes and Cecillia Walker.

He is named, "my Grandson Marcus Son of my Son Silvanus", in his grandfather Sylvanus Stokes' Will on 18 May 1742.[1]

Marcus is named as godfather of his sister Lucy at her christening.[2]

Children

On 30 December 1794, Marcus Stokes of Pitt County petitioned the General Assembly of North Carolina to rename his illegimate children.[3]

The petition was enacted 7 February 1795:[4]

"An act to alter the names of certain persons therein mentioned. Whereas application hath been made to the General Assembly to alter the names Marcus Barrow, Joel Barrow, Alpha Barrow, and Lydia Barrow illegitimate children of Marcus Stokes of Pitt County to those of Marcus Stokes, Joel Stokes, Alpha Stokes, and Lydia Stokes. . ."
