Solomon Terwilliger was born to Jan Evertsen and Sytie van Etten in Shawangunk, New York, and baptized September 1, 1700 at the Old Dutch Church in Kingston.[1] He married Rachel Oostrander on July 8, 1720 in Kingston, after the traditional three publications of their marriage bann (first published June 19, 1720).[2] They took up residence in the town of Hurley, where they remained until their death.
It is likely the family lived on the land purchased by his father, Jan Evertsz, in 1686. In 1728 and 1729, Solomon bought additional land from the Hurley trustees, but acreage is not mentioned.
Solomon held several positions in the town government, first as "Fence-Viewer" from 1722-1726, then was elected as a trustee in 1727, which he held until sometime around 1737. In addition, Solomon was a member of the Hurley Company, Ulster County Militia, and is listed as a corporal in 1738.[3]
