Biography

Joseph Townsend was born 18 Nov 1684 in Bucklebury, Berkshire, England. He was apprenticed as a weaver. He married Martha Wooderson in 1712 and about fifteen months later, with their infant child, they sailed for America. They had eight children.

He died 9 Apr 1766 at his plantation in East Bradford Township, Chester, Pennsylvania and his wife died a year later. Both were buried at Birmingham Friends burying grounds, Birmingham Lafayette Cemetery, Pennsylvania

"Born in Berkshire County, England in 1684. In 1710, Joseph married Martha Wooderson, who was born in 1683. He was also a member of the Society of Friends, and with his wide and sister Joan also emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1712 and resided at Philadelphia and Old Chester, and finally settled near Westchester, Pa., in 1725, where he owned, also at East Bradford, several hundred acres of land, and at whose house his uncle Richard Townsend died."[1] Uncertain if sister Joan is Joseph or Martha's sibling
