Biography

Rebecca is estimated to have been born about 1614, probably in England. Her parents and surname are at this time unknown. She passed away before 16 February 1668 in Isle of Wight County, Colony of Virginia. (She is not named in her husband's will made on that date and is presumed deceased.)

Name

Rebecca's Last Name at Birth was neither Izard nor Bagnall; it is Unknown. The surname of Robert's wife has never been documented, although some have posited the name "Cripps." She is not named in his will dated 16 February 1667/68 and proved May 1668. The incorrect surnames derive from Rebecca who was married first to Roger Bagnall and second to Richard Izard. This Rebecca had unfortunately been conflated with her. (See Research Notes for more information.)

Research Notes

Note: Rebecca's husband Robert made his will 15 February 1667/68 and it can be found in DEED and WILL BOOK 1, page 9, Isle of Wight, Virginia. It was proved and recorded in May 1668. George Gwilliam and Richard Izard were appointed to take care of the minor boys, Robert and Richard, until they came of age. On January 10, 1669, a Rebecca Izard signed the account of the estate of the late Robert Braswell. This makes Rebecca his widow. The question is whether her maiden name is Izard or did she remarry and her new married name is Izard. Women do not typically revert to their maiden name upon the death of their husband, so the most probable scenario is that Rebecca remarried.

The assumption here that Rebecca Izard was widow of Robert Bracewell is incorrect. Richard Izard was appointed guardian by Robert's will. He died in 1669 and his widow Rebecca Izard assumed the guardianship. Shirley Dalton 16:19, 3 July 2020 (UTC)

There is no reason to believe that Rebecca was married to Robert Underwood and no documentation has been presented to support this marriage. There are no sources at all present on Robert Underwood's profile. Recommend Robert Underwood be removed as husband and Dianah Underwood be removed as daughter.
Izard or Bagnall-1 and Unknown-519943 appear to represent the same person because: This Rebecca's maiden name is not known; therefore we are merging her into Unknown-519943.

Izard or Bagnall-1 and Izard-13 appear to represent the same person because: These profiles should be merged to provide only one profile for the wife of Robert Bracewell. Per notes and information on both profiles, her Last Name at Birth should be changed to "Unknown."

We need to change one to Unknown and then merge the dupe into that. I will go ahead and do that.

Almost all of the information included on this page refers to Rebecca Bracewell, wife of first Roger Bagnall and second Richard Izard. She is not the same person as the Rebecca who was married to Robert Bracewell. Data and citations posted here that do not refer to wife of Robert Bracewell are being removed.

Find A Grave Memorial #71082198 does not refer to wife of Robert Bracewell. The information on that page is the result of several differing theories regarding Rebecca Bracewell, wife of Roger Bagnall and Richard Izard. She has been conflated with the Rebecca who was married to Robert Bracewell. Reference to this memorial is being removed.
