Biography

Catharine _____ married Benjamin Bowman, Sr. on April 15, 1776. Her birth date is on her tombstone, along with her death date. But there is no certainty as to her parents' names or where she was born.^[1] On page 162 of the October 1997 issue of Mennonite Family History, Dr. Bittinger indicates that the surname of Benjamin Bowman's wife is not known. He wrote "Numerous researchers, relying on the Frederick County, Maryland will of George Wine which merely names his daughter, Catharine Bowman, without giving her husband's first name, have erroneously concluded that Benjamin's wife was Catherine Wine." This source^[2] is one of those that makes that error. Dr. Bittinger goes on to say that more recently others have referred to her as Catherine Shoemaker, but that he could find no evidence to support Shoemaker as her maiden name either. Based on his observations, her maiden name has been changed from Shoemaker to Unknown.
