Willem Frederik was born in 1771. He passed away in 1855.
Willem Fredrik was born to Alexander, Graaf van Bijland, and Anna, Baronesse van der Duijn. He was baptised in the Nieuwe (Hervormde) Kerk of 's-Gravenhage on the 11th of June, 1771. [1] Other sources, such as this municipal census[2], state that he was born on the 5th of June.
Willem married Mary Christian, daughter of Sir Hugh Cloberry Christian, on the 20th of June, 1806, on the Isle of Wight. [3] Willem and Mary had the following children:
When Mary passed away in 1818, Willem married Virginie Frédérique Wilhelmine Aspasia Craan, around the 22nd of December, 1825, in Sint-Joost-ten-Node, Belgium. They had the following children:
There are various records from the Department of War that refer to van Bijlandt, dating from 1817 to 1830, and a pension dating to 1840, but they are only available at the Nationaal Archief. [6] There are also other records from the same department dating to 1828 to 1840, and 1830-1831, also only available at the Nationaal Archief. [7]
Studbooks: [8]
Bijlandt's military career began at the age of 12, when he enrolled as a Cadet in the Dutch Guards Dragoons, 9 December 1783. In June 1786 he was a wachtmeester, or Guardsman, with the Guards on horseback.
In August of 1787 Bijlandt was promoted to Ensign of the Oranje Regiment in Gelderland, and a month later he was transferred to the Regiment Gardes te Voet or the Guards Foot Regiment, and promoted to Lieutenant. The studbook does not specify whether he was a 2nd lieutenant or a 1st lieutenant.
Bijlandt was then promoted to Captain of his regiment in 1790.
In 1793 and 1794, Bijlandt was stationed in Brabant, most likely as a part of the Flanders Campaign, in which the Anglo-Allied forces attempted to invade France through Belgium.
In September of 1794 Bijlandt was transferred to Col. Schwartz's Battalion, while still retaining his rank in the Guard.
In April of 1795, Bijlandt resigned his commission (due to the establishment of the Batavian Republic) and joined with the Prince of Orange in Bremen in August.
Bijlandt and many other Orangist soldiers went to England and offered their services there. Bijlandt was promoted to Captain and Commander of an English Regiment of the Hompesch Hussars, and was sent to the West Indies in November 1795. He served there until 1797.
In August of 1796, Bijlandt transferred (and promoted to Major/Commander) to a regiment of Foot Chasseurs (Jagers) still stationed in the West Indies. He was later promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel in July of 1797.
A month later Bijlandt was transferred to a Cavalry regiment of the same name which was stationed in Ireland. Bijlandt was stationed in Ireland from 1797 until 1802, when he returned to his home country. At the battle of Ballinamuck, Bijlandt commanded over 4000 men.
In June of 1800, Bijlandt was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel Effective. 2 years later, Bijlandt was paid off by the British and returned home by Order of His Majesty. He did not actually join with the military again until 1814, where he was placed (still retaining his rank as Lt-Col.) in the 12th Battalion of the new National Militia.
In June of 1814 he was promoted to Colonel, and in April of 1815 he was promoted to General-Major.
He received a gratuity for his service at Waterloo, a total sum of 30,589 francs (14,453 guilders). [9]
In late 1818, Bijlandt was appointed Provincial Commandant of Zuid-Brabant, which is now Brabant in Belgium.
On the 12th of February, 1824, Bijlandt was awarded the Military Order of William (the Militaire Willems-Orde) and was named a Knight (Ridder), 3rd Class. [10]
Willem Frederik passed away on the 25th of October, 1855, in Princenhage, at the age of 84. [11]

In the Netherlands 'van' is part of the surname and should therefore be part of the LNAB.
The baptism of Willem Frederik, 11-06-1771, shows us the Last Name At Birth/Baptism (LNAB) is "van Bijland" and not "van Bijlandt". We always use the spelling at/of the oldest document findable. Even if we think the clergyman spelled it wrong. :)
Good reason to find first the birth or baptism note before starting a profile. Making duplicates is inevitable but the chance is bigger if we do not follow that rule.
Merging makes a profile invisible for us but not for the servers. Space is money. :) So avoiding merges/duplicates will keep WT free for all! :)
Thank you! Kind regards from The Netherlands, Astrid

I had previously created a profile for this man with the surname van Bijland. Then I found a duplicate with the surname van Bijlandt. I proposed a merge, and it seems the merge has ended up with Willem's LNAB as van Bijlandt. I will fix this now.
