Disputed Spouse

Robert Wade and Thomas Birchard were neighbors. Robert Wade married Susanna. Thomas Birchard had a daughter Susanna, who is unaccounted for. This is a possibility, but there is no proof.

Biography

Robert Wade was in Dorchester 1635[2][3]

He removed to Hartford[2] by 1639[4] where he was an early member of the first church.[5] His name is on the Founder's Monument.

"April IXth 1640. The Court of Election." These were made free:-- Hartford ... Robert Wade...[6][2]

He received land[7] "by Courtesie of the town."[3] He had 10 acres in Hartford.[4] He owned lots 39 & 40 on the attached map.

He went to Seabrook,[5] where the general court granted him a divorce from his wife Joane in 1657.[2][4][3][6]

Robert Wade Divorce p. 301[6]

He was living in Norwich in 1669.[2] He was on a list of freeman[3] taken 9 Oct 1669.[8] Robert Wade is considered an original settler of Norwich. He had six acres; sixteen rods front, next to John Birchard, which he sold, in 1677, to Caleb Abell.[9] His wife was Susanna.[9]

Court action by the heirs of Robert Wade [New London County Court Records 8:133] and two deeds in Saybrook [Saybrook Land Records, 2:96 & 2:402] ... identify the four surviving children of Robert Wade Sr. ie. (1) Robert Wade Jr. m. 11 Mar 1690/1 d. 1696. Had a daughter Susanna m. Aaron Clarke of Lebanon. (2) Mary, m. Peter Cross of Windham; (3) Susanna, m. Jonathan Gennings of Windham; (4) a daughter who was 2nd wife of Richard Smith of Lyme, mother of Daniel Smith.[10]

In the Connecticut State Library, Hartford, there is a series of New London County Court records labeled "Trials." Three volumes, 4, 5, and 6, are bound together and paged continuously. In 4:21 it was recorded that Robert Wade's inventory was exhibited 9 June 1682. Page 56 contains the following 23 Nov 1683 court record.[11]
"The inventory of the Estate of Robert Wade of Norwich deceased being exhibited in Court is approved & ordered to bee recorded and the Court makes Distribution as follows viz:
To the Relict Widow £27:19:00
To Robert Wade £22:00:00
To Susanna £11:00:00
To Mary £11:00:00
To Elizabeth £11:00:00
The Court Grants administration of the sd Estate unto William Backus and John Tracy."[11]
Susanna married Capt. John Jennings, Mary married Peter Cross, leaving Elizabeth to be the wife of Richard Smith.[11]

Children listed in the probate records. Further research is needed to determine their ages/mother/birth order. A cursory glance indicates they are children of the second wife Susannah.

  • Robert Wade Jr. died 1696
  • Susanna m. Jonathan Ginnings/Jennings. They had children between 1679 and 1699.
  • Mary m. Peter Cross. They had children between 1679 and 1699.
  • Elizabeth 2 of 3 wives of Richard Smith.

?????

Child: Rebecca m. John Owen 3 Oct 1650[3] There is no evidence that she was his daughter. She was not listed in the distribution of his estate (which was done by the court). It appears to be only a coincidence of names.

Robert Wade of Windham died in 1698.[3] Probate proves this incorrect.

Robert Wade (Jr.) died before 3 Sept 1696 when the Court records (p. 115) report the inventory of the estate of Robert Wade of Windham, was exhibited by Peter Cross. Administration was granted to Peter Cross and Jonathan Ginnings. Lt. John Fitch and Ensign Crane to assist managing the estate.[7]

Susanna Wade m. Aaron Clarke 31 May 1711.[3] Daughter of 2nd Robert

Is this perhaps the son? Robert Wade name on the Mason Monument celebrating victory of King Philips War (1675-76)[12][9]

Wade-563 and Wade-169 appear to represent the same person because: These are the same people. I believe wife Susannah should be unknown and wife Rebecca Jemima should be Joane Unknown. See the bio on Wade-169 Thank you
