Biography

Lucy was Cherokee.

Lucy Ann Ward was born July 8, 1829 in the Cherokee Nation (East), the daughter of George Ward a Cherokee, and Lucy Mayes, a white woman. [1] The family removed to Indian Territory as "Old Settlers" in 1832 and settled in the Skin Bayou District. [2] Lucy attended the New Springplace Mission School in 1841 with Matthew Thompson, to whom she was briefly married. Matthew Thompson was also Cherokee; they were married about 1849, [3] but by 1851 she appears on the 1851 Drennan Roll living next to her father and siblings. [4] She appears on the 1851 Drennan Roll with several other members of her family as "disputed;" they should have been on the Old Settler Roll. [5] She married George Coulcher (Coultier) about 1851 and Robert Howell about 1857. [6] Robert was killed during the Civil War. [7] Her last husband was Napoleon Bonaparte Luckey. They were married on 6 Jul 1867 in Benton County, Arkansas. [8] They remarried under Cherokee law on January 1, 1868. [9] Lucy and Napoleon are listed in the Delaware District on the 1880 Cherokee Census. [10]in 1890 they lived in the Saline District. [11] Lucy has no recorded children. Her death date is uncertain, but Napoleon remarried in 1895. [12]

Ward-34375 and Ward-20872 appear to represent the same person because: Dear Private Scherer, I was merely guessing at an 1835 birth date. Do your family records have anything more specific as to birth date or the dates of any of the other three marriages? I have not found her in any census records. Margaret Summitt.
Thank you. I will compare the profiles and propose a merge if necessary.
I proposed a merge of the two Napoleon Luckeys and will look into Lucy's birth date.
I have entered a correct bio for Lucy with dates since this will be the remaining profile after the merge.

I have cleaned up the other profile with correct dates and sources. Husbands should come with this profile when it is merged into the other one.
