George Henry Watson, the third son of John and Elizabeth Watson of Bourne, Lincolnshire, England, was born in about 1832. He was christened at Bourne on the 26th of May 1833.[1][2]
In 1841 the family were living at North Fen, Bourne. John was working as an agricultural labourer, and he and Elizabeth's ages were rounded to 40. Their children present were: John (age 11), William (9), George (8), Mary (6), Edward (5), and Elizabeth (7 months).[3] George was not living with his parents and younger siblings at the 1851 census.
George along with his family gained Assisted Immigration To New South Wales from England on the sailing ship Ellenborough. They arrived in Australia on October 31, 1854.[4]
George married local Illawarra girl Ann Jane Gay in 1860; at or about Kiama, New South Wales, Australia.[5]
George and Ann went on to have as many as 18 children over more than 25 years, in this region.[6]
For many years George Watson a dairy farmer kept herds at firstly Broughton Village, Jamberoo and later Kangaroo Valley, as well as spending some time on the North Coast of New South Wales. He was an active director of the Barrengarry Dairy Company and a pioneer in this field. The Watson family operated the Barrengarry Store for some years, which was later sold to George's son in law, Ernie Nelson. The Old Barrengarry Store is still standing as at 2017, now operated as a cafe and pie shop.
In September 1922; at the age of 90, George Watson a well respected Pioneer of the New South Wales south coast passed away at Nowra.[7] He is now buried there in the Nowra Cemetery on the Princes Highway.[8][9]
He was survived by 14 children, 7 sons and 7 daughters, along with 76 Grandchildren and 9 Great Grandchildren. However only one of his siblings; Elizabeth or Mrs. E. Faulks as she was then known survived him.
