Biography

Sarah Ann "Sally" White was born about 1815 in Estill County, Kentucky. She was the daughter of Edward White and Polly Ann (Edge) White.

Kentucky barn

Sally married Benjamin Richardson on the 18th of June 1831 in Estill County. Their first child, a daughter they named Martha, was born in 1837.[1] By the time the 1840 census was taken Benjamin and Sally had added Edward and David to their family.[1] Benjamin has not been found in the 1840 census records, but they were most likely still in Estill County. Over the next ten years they added Sarilda, Amos, Julia, William and Kissie to the home.[1] They were living in Estill County and Benjamin was working as a Laborer.[1] He owned no real estate and neither him nor Sally could read or write.[1] Sally stayed home and took care of the home and family.[1]

Crisp Kentucky Morn

Estill County had some records destroyed in 1864 due to flooding. The census record for Sally may have been among those, as it is not available. Sally and Benjamin had added Daniel, Henry, Hardin and Andrew to their family by 1860,[2] along with an unnamed daughter that didn't live.[3] Only Millie and Edward were of 'legal age' in 1860. Millie had married in 1855 and Amos in 1858. Edward had not yet married. This left Benjamin and Sally with a household size of twelve. Abraham Lincoln was elected president in 1860. Within months seven states seceded from the Union. With a farm to tend to, and many mouths to feed; Benjamin was facing tumultuous times as the country split into Confederate and Union states. In September of 1861 President Lincoln (a fellow Kentuckian) wrote:

I think to lose Kentucky is nearly the same as to lose the whole game. Kentucky gone, we cannot hold Missouri, nor Maryland. These all against us, and the job on our hands is too large for us. We would as well consent to separation at once, including the surrender of this capitol[4]

Benjamin, as a 'veteran volunteer' joined the Union troups in Kentucky, enlisting in Estill County. Sally bore her final child, Caroline, in 1864.[2] It is unknown whether Benjamin died from his illness contracted while fighting, or for other reasons. Her children David, Sarilda, Julia and Keziah all married between the years of 1862 and 1868.[5] During that time General Lee surrended and President Lincoln was shot. The Civil War had ended and slavery was abolished. Her mother Polly and her brother Abner both died in 1860. The decade had seen a lot of changes.

1870 was a much quieter time for Sally. She was still living in Crooked Creek (in Estill County) with the remaining underage children. At the age of forty-nine Sally was a widow that stayed home to tend to the home and family.[2] William (age 18), Henry (age 16), Andy (age 14) and Hardin (age 12) all tended to the farm.[2] Caroline, age six, stayed home with Sally.[2] Her twenty-three-year-old daughter Julia Ann was also living with them.[2] Nobody in the home could read or write, and none attended school.[2] Food and other necessities for the family had become the priority with no man in the house. Sally's real estate was valued at $300; the same as many of her neighbors.[2] Sally's brother Basil and sister Rebecca both died that year. Her father had passed a few years before.

1870 Federal Census.

Sally turned sixty-one in the year 1880. William and Henry had married and started their own families. Hardin married in October of 1880. Andy, age twenty-two, worked the farm, while Caroline, age seventeen, helped Sally take care of their home in Crooked Creek.[6] Her beloved husband Benjamin had been gone for about fifteen years and Sally had never remarried. Over the next two years Andy and Caroline both married.[5] As there is no 1890 census, and no living family member that remembers; it is unknown whether Andy or one of the other children moved their family in with Sally to help her out. Caroline and Butler were in Riddell, in Estill County, in 1900. Andy and Annie were in Red Lick, in Estill County.

Sally lived to the age of eighty, taking her last breath on the 20th of June 1899. She was laid to rest in the Amos Richardson cemetery. Sally was preceded in death by two daughters (unnamed and Keziah), her husband and both parents; and survived by eleven children and many grandchildren. Her legacy was a love for family that carried on for generations.

Research Notes

  • If you look at the heading on Ancestry for the 1830 census, it is labeled "Ireland, Indexes to Wills, 1384-1858." This may explain why some census records have been difficult to find.
  • I looked on FamilySearch for her 1860 census and couldn't find it. There was record loss in Estill County in 1864 and again in 1964 that destroyed some records.
  • Estill County was formed in 1808 from land given by Clark and Madison counties.[4] A courthouse built in 1941 replaced a structure dating from the 1860's. Estill County was strongly pro-Union during the Civil War. Indeed, a larger proportion of Estill County’s population volunteered for the Union Army than the population of any free state, or of any Kentucky county except the famous Republican bastion of Owsley County.
  • To Do: Add the children in to WikiTree
  • In 1880 a Kesiah White lived next to Sally. This may have been a sister-in-law. A Stephen White was listed after Kesiah's household; not one of the known brother's of Sally but this configuration should be looked at again when her parent's profiles are done.
  • Relationships: Her marriage record proves her husband but not her parents. I believe that there is a marriage bond that proves her father. Her siblings will have to be checked to see if it can be proven that her father was still married to her mother after her birth.
