Biography

Dear Cedric

We have heard about you and the cousins in New Zealand from my mother all my life but it is only now through Michael McCook’s ancestry.com family tree that we are able to make contact. My mother would be thrilled that I have finally been able to find the family in NZ.

My Great Grandfather was Frederick Cole White. My maternal grandmother was his daughter Dorothy Mabel White. I am not sure how much information you already have about her side of the family but I am guessing there was some contact years ago or my own mother would not have been able to tell me so much about you. She may even have newspaper cuttings from when you were Admiral of the Fleet at a time when the Queen was visiting.

You probably already know that Dot married Jack Ruffell Tillett and they had two daughters Gillian and Wendy. Jack was a marine engineer and during WWII he was based in Cambeltown. In peacetime he crewed with Captain Hector Tortell on Lord and Lady Docker’s yacht Shemara. My brother has most of the family photos at the moment as he has been organising everything into decent albums.

I don’t know if you ever heard of the Shemara but we have a few photos of it. Lady Docker had a bit of a reputation and I think there are a few newspaper clippings from that time. Jack died whilst on board a boat in 1949 –a fishing trip I believe- and Dot remained living in Southampton for many years. Jack is buried at the church in Brightlingsea and Dot’s ashes were interred in his grave.

My mother Gillian met my father Roy Redmond when they were living in Southampton in Raymond Road and her sister Wendy married Derek Bannerman.

I was born in Southampton and we lived there until I was about 4. It was a number of years later that Dot moved back to Brightlingsea to 70 New Street. Uncle Hazell her brother lived just down the road in Nelson Street. Hazell was a mariner also and later ran a pub. He married three times. His first wife Olive was lovely but poorly and died young – they didn’t have any children.

I never knew his second wife she died before I was born and his third wife was Vera Field. Hazell collaborated on a book and some stories – I think my aunt Wendy might have them.

Dot and Hazell’s younger sister Kathleen White married Ron Smith and they were primarily publicans. They ran a pub just outside Dovercourt. Ron was also a school Governor. Kath lived in Dovercourt until her death. Kath, her husband Ron and son Brian are all buried at the church on the outskirts of Dovercourt.

Kath had a daughter Pauline and a son Brian. Pauline had her own hairdressing business in Dovercourt and Brian studied to be an architect (in Bristol I think) and I think the Metal Exchange in London was one of his but I think he enjoyed life more when he moved on to teaching at Chelsea Art College. I used to meet up with him for lunch during the days I worked for BBC Television.

Lime Grove Studios was right opposite where Brian worked. Pauline had a bad accident with her glass front door a number of years ago now and lost most of her sight. She is retired from hairdressing but I think she is still working part time in a bakery just for the interest more than anything. Pauline and her husband Terry go on regular cruises in different parts of the world.

My brother and I both lodged with Brian at different times when we lived in London. Brian died aged about 46 from skin cancer that spread. He never married and never had children. Fred – Dot’s eldest brother - married twice. I met his second wife Beattie where she was living in Lymington and their daughter Janet. Janet had two daughters but mum lost touch after Beattie died.

Fred died quite young – I think he had tuberculosis. Mum used to tell us a little about the brothers and times on the Isle of Wight but I am not blessed with a good memory so I fear I have forgotten so much. My mother Gillian worked for Lloyds Bank when she met my dad and at various times over the years and before she retired she was a car insurance clerk. My dad worked for Lloyds Bank for 40+ years. His father Cecil Thomas Redmond was an Admiralty draftsman at the time they married. He was involved in signals work and also in Cambeltown at some point during WWII.

My father’s side of the family are supposed to be related somehow to Admiral Lord Nelson via his father’s mother Elizabeth Alice Nelson but I have no definite proof of that yet just need a bit of time to investigate. My brother is called John Redmond and he is a Civil Engineer with his own partnership in London. His company website is http://hurstpm.net/ and I think he has his photo on the website. His major clients are The John Lewis partnership (a big shopping chain), Duke of Westminster, Grosvenor Estates and they have even done work for people like the Russian Roman Obramovich.

The Civil engineering must come from my father’s side as his grandfather lectured in Civil Engineering in Portsmouth at what is now the university there. My brother’s son James is starting his A levels on the road to the same career. His daughter Bethany is still at school but she wants to be an architect.

John does love sailing and goes out regularly at weekends. Uncle Hazell taught us all to row on the lake behind the beach huts in Brightlingsea and he started to teach John to sail there are well. John went to Sea Scouts as a boy and my own son Alasdair goes to Sea Scouts now. My son has never been formally taught to sail but a couple of years ago the sea scout leaders put them in small sailing dinghies two to a boat and Alasdair took to it like a duck to water I went back to collect him and he had really good control of the boat – must be in the genes!

My own sailing effort was with my husband on a sailing holiday in Greece and another in St Lucia. I love to Kayak though but don’t get much opportunity. We have a holiday apartment in Finland which is rented out as a business most of the year but we go once or twice a year. It is a winter sport resort for up to 9 months of the year and my son can snowboard - the button lift to go up is only about 100 metres from our apartment door. In the summer when all the snow has melted the lakes are beautiful for kayaking/canoeing on. I understand you don’t have experience of email or internet but if someone were able to show you the website is www.ruka.fi for the resort and our apartment is an Aurinkorrine type which has a virtual tour giving an idea of the inside, there are some outside photos I think and the apartment overlooks the lake which is completely frozen in winter. Ruka is just below the arctic circle and the sky is amazing at certain times of year. Have you ever seen the Northern Lights?

I have my own business. I have worked for myself since 1994 and became a limited company in 2007. Redmond McLean Ltd. I cover a lot of different areas so it is hard to say I just to do xyz for my business services but I work in Human Resource systems, general IT training, elearning, business intelligence reporting, data mining, software application manual development, training manual development. I created a ‘temporary’ HR database for London’s City Hall before the first mayoral elections in 2000 and they were still using it 6 years later, they eventually got round to purchasing a commercial system after I worked with their project manager to produce a specification. I do a lot of IT training with the London Development Agency and the Olympic staff and recently did a manual for a new IT system they had developed together with delivering the training on it to their Olympic Delivery Partners. My father-in-law Hector McLean was Head of Lloyds Register of Shipping for the Far East. His wife Nancy had relatives in New Zealand and she visited them a few years ago. I must look up their details as they may well live near to you! My husband Alan McLean was born in Kobe Japan not long after his family moved to Japan in the 1950’s. They also lived in Nagasaki. One of the places they lived at was just behind the peace park there. Last August we visited Japan –the first time in 35 years for my husband but his Japanese was still fluent enough for us to get around. I was able to rely on him to translate the voice on the satnav whilst I was driving. Our son was totally absorbed in the information at the bomb museum there. We also met an old and very dear friend of my in-laws. A lovely lady called Mrs Ono, her husband had been a dr with his own hospital in Nagasaki but was too ill to visit and died shortly after we came home. Mrs Ono used to run tea ceremonies and promised to show me how to do it if we get a chance to go back.My Aunt Wendy Bannerman had two sons. Graham is the eldest and he is a professional broadcaster and has his own talent management business – his website is www.wavecommunications.com. He has regular slots as a radio DJ and does podcasts for large companies amongst other things. Andrew is the younger brother and he is a policeman. He has been in special branch and on protection duty at one of the airports. He has also been in anti-terrorist surveillance work and is currently teaching other officers to do the same. Graham has two children – a daughter called Ellie about 11 years and a son called Fergus 2 years old. Andrew is married but they don’t have any children. There are other White cousins that we have currently lost touch with but I hope to find them again. Fred’s daughter Janet had two daughters of her own. Their maiden names would be Chamberlain but I have no other information yet. Would love to hear from you, any memories/stories of family members. Also Michael said you are working on a book – I would be interested to see it – would you be able to send me the ISBN number when it is published. If there is anything you would like to ask please do not hesitate to get in touch.
