Biography

Thomas Whitt was born in Appalachia, in Virginia.

Descendant of St. Patrick.

By trade, Thomas was a carpenter.

His grandson, my father, took up cabinet making in 1980. He made all of his children beautiful tables, cabinets, desks, secretaries, wine cabinets, china cabinet, & grandfather clocks. This must be where my father (Walter Rufus Whitt) received his gift to built and sometimes design his own, furniture.^[2]

Thomas is the son of William Gibson Whitt and Sarah Ann Lockhart. Thomas lived in his parents household in 1850 & 1960 in Tazewell, Virginia, United States^[3][4]

He married Patsy Ellen Mercer on July 23, 1868 in Virginia.^[5]

They had ten (10) children together.^[6]

In 1870, the couple lived in Jeffersonville, Tazewell, Virginia, United States with their first child, John William.^[7]

By 1880, his family had expanded with five (5) more children and his father, William Gibson Whitt.^[8]

On April 20 1881, my grandfather, Alonzo Whitt, was born, although the birth certificate says "Lawn Whitt" in Chilhowee, Smyth, Virginia, United States.^[9]

On September 8, 1884, Maggie Whitt was born. I believe Maggie had a twin, Cora H. because her birth is September, 1888 as well. But, no mention of Cora is verified except on Details under Thomas' profile on FamilySearch.com.^[10][11]

The last child, Emma, was born in March 1889.^[12]

Thomas died in 1897 and was buried in Maplewood Cemetery, Tazewell, Tazewell, Virginia, USA^[13]

The remaining children are listed in the Mother's Household in the 1900 US Census.^[14]
