Ello's family was probably among the early Mennonites in the area. The Anabaptists were in Groningen by 1534, when they were banned in the province. That same year some of the Muensterite Anabaptists stirred up trouble - one declared himself Messiah and declared they must kill all the priests and government authorities to "inherit the Kingdom of God." This rebellion was put down, and the Mennonites were known as peaceful after this. Menno Simons lived in Groningen in the mid 1500's, so Ello's family may have heard him preach. In 1583 Anabaptists were persecuted by Spain, being required to attend Catholic services. When churches became Reformed in 1594, persecution continued. Most individual congregations didn't consolidate until the late 1500's; the small group of Mennonites in Meeden joined those in Midwolda and Beerta to worship, and around 1620 their congregation became Old Flemish (more conservative), about the time the last members of Ello's family joined the Reformed Church. Persecution of Anabaptists finally ended in 1662. [1]
