Biography

Called Ann Sparks Fitzpatrick in the 1818 (written in 1816) Nelson County will of her father (copy attached in Images), David Witt, she was given "a negro man Joe". In the year 1820, Ann's mother, Sarah "Sally" Witt began to distribute her husband's estate, including transferring the slaves (with the exception of Hannah and Bet, who she kept in her household). Joe ought to have been transferred to Ann that year. No slaves appear in the 1820 census for Samuel Fitzpatrick, but it may be that Sarah had not yet transferred Joe before the census was taken that year. She had transferred some, but not all, of the slaves, and a male between the ages of 14-25 is listed in her household that could have been Joe.

Ann's husband, Samuel, died in 1825, and as a result of an Indenture, much of the household's goods, furniture, livestock, and crops were sold.

Census
