CHANGE TO BEST ANSWER PROCESS:  After much discussion we have come to the conclusion that all answers in the Weekend Chat are of equal importance and weight.  So we are going to discontinue the Best Answer portion as it adds points and then takes them away from posters and is causing some hurt feelings.  So in the interest of everyone is equal and valued we will delete any best answers given which will deduct those points because it has been pointed out that to give everyone best answer is also not a viable option.

Weekend Chat is for everyone. It's a place to catch up on what people are up to and to share what you've been doing.  New members can say hello, introduce themselves, ask questions, and meet each other.  Our seasoned members can share progress or successes from their projects, give tips and advice, or chime in on hot topics.

Post as many answers and comments as you wish. It doesn't hurt anyone to post a lot, and enjoy the multitude of topics.

TIPS

Today’s tips are about locked profiles and suggestions that have come out of the Data Doctors Project related to Name errors.

  •  Locked profiles that should be open?  If the profile should be open due to the person’s age (anyone born 150 years ago or died 100 years ago), go to the second tab at the top right of the profile page where it shows the profile’s Wiki ID. In the drop down, go down to the choice that says, “Open Profile Request.” You will be asked to confirm the age is old enough to require it being opened. Also, leaving a short note of evidence (such as birth date is 1830 or child was born in 1797) will help the administrator make a faster decision to open the profile. You will receive an email when the profile has been opened. You can then go back to correct your error. Leave a comment on the Error Status Page of what you did. This will alert others who might come along that a second request is not needed.
  •  700 Name Errors (the various numbers in each line refer to a different part of the name such as prefix, first name last name, suffix, preferred name, etc):  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Data_Doctors#700_Name_Errors and https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Name_Field_Guidelines and
  • 711, 721, 731, 741, 751, 761, 771, 781, 791 Separators in Name: There should be no separators in the field (such as punctuation or spaces). Exceptions to this rule are stated for each field on its help page.  Also see the Style Guide for names:
  • 712, 722, 732, 742, 752, 762, 772, 782, 792 Number in Name:  numbers to differentiate one person in the family from another with the same name should not be the primary name fields.  Some people add them in nicknames, suffix, or bio-section and there are discussions about the acceptability in many G2G threads.  Refer to the Style Guide or the Name help pages for more information.
  • 713, 723, 733, 743, 753, 763, 773, 783, 793 Suffix in Name:
  • 714, 724, 734, 744, 754, 764, 774, 784, 794 Wrong word in Name:
  • 715, 725, 735, 745, 755, 765, 775, 785, 795 Wrong character in Name:
  • Some additional name notes:  Surname prepositions, particles, and prefixes
  • Care must be exercised to ensure surnames that use a particle, prefix, or preposition, such as Le, La, De, Du, Van, Van Der, Den, Ten, Zum, etc. correctly reflect the spacing used in the individual's name when they were alive. Example "van den Berg" as compared with "Vandenberg". As with any other change of name, in the generation(s) where the rendering of the name changes, the version used at birth should be entered as the Last Name at Birth (LNAB), and the version used later should be reflected as the Current Last Name or in the Other Last Names field as appropriate.
  • In the case of medieval and earlier profiles (birth dates earlier than 1600), the standard for 'le', 'la, 'de' and 'du' is to NOT include them in the Last Name at Birth (LNAB) field, but to rather include them in the Current Last Name field. For example, Gilbert de Clare would have a LNAB of Clare and Current Last Name of de Clare. If you are unsure of what LNAB to use, please post a question on the G2G forum.
  • At no time should these prefixes be included as a middle name nor abbreviated. Continuing the above example, the Middle Name should not be "van den" and a surname should not be entered as "v. d. Berg".
  • It is never appropriate to use ALL CAPS
  • Personal coding systems:  Sometimes genealogists have their own coding systems for identifying or distinguishing individuals. These may be beneficial in personal research but on a shared website where we collaborate on the same ancestor profiles we should only use fields for their intended purposes, as described in this style guide.
  • If you're in doubt about something or don't have room in a fixed field, use the biographical text area.  Explanations of how names changed over time can be written out in detail.  Don't be afraid to include questions and issues to be discussed. These can be included contextually in references or they can be posted as Bulletin Board comments.
  • Prefix:  This is for a name prefix or title such as Mrs, Sir, Dr, Gov, Sgt, etc.  If a person has multiple prefixes or titles use the highest, last or preferred one, e.g. Capt over Lt..  The prefix is limited to 10 characters.
  • Other names do not use quotation marks.
  • If a woman had multiple married names you can include the others in the Other Last Names field.
  • Suffix:  should only be used for the Suffix at Birth.  For example, Jr. and III.  It is better to put Dr. in the Prefix field than Ph.D. or M.D. in the SuffixThe suffix is limited to 10 characters.
  • If a title cannot be properly paired with the Proper First Name at birth it should not be used in the Prefix field. Instead, it should be part of the Preferred First Name or Nicknames. For example, King is not an appropriate Prefix for George VI because his Proper First Name at birth was Albert and he cannot be called King Albert. See Name Fields for European Aristocrats.

Huguenot Migration Puzzle

This Project seeks to acknowledge people who self-identified as religious Huguenots, sometimes called "French Huguenots," who lived between 1540 and 1790, spoke French, or a language associated with French, were Protestant / Reformed Christians, and were somehow persecuted or discriminated against so that they chose to leave their home (either within France or a mixed-language borderland such as Wallonia, Flanders, Artois, Hainaut, Franche Comte, or Alsace-Lorraine...), and find a better life abroad. We seek to add their profiles to our growing Global Family Tree or to improve those Huguenot profiles already on WikiTree. Adding or improving primary and secondary sources for such profiles is a key part of this Project's mission.

Today is....  (we have two, to choose from)

                             NATIONAL WAFFLE DAY

The first United States patent for a waffle iron was issued to Cornelius Swarthout of Troy, New York on August 24, 1869.

In honor of this anniversary, National Waffle Day is observed each year on August 24th.

‘We need to remember what’s important in life: friends, waffles, work. Or waffles, friends, work, it doesn’t matter. But work is third.’ ~ Amy Poehler

Eaten throughout the world, a waffle is a leavened batter or dough that is cooked between two plates that are patterned to give a characteristic size, shape and surface impression.  Waffles come in many forms.  Depending on the type of batter or iron used, the resulting waffle varies by consistency, size, shape, and flavor.

Waffle irons and waffles originated around the 14th century.  An anonymous husband penned the first known waffle recipe as a set of instructions for his wife.  According to the manuscript, Le Ménagier de Paris, each of the four recipes began:

Beat some eggs in a bowl, season with salt and add wine. Toss in some flour, and mix. Then fill, little by little, two irons at a time with as much of the paste as a slice of cheese is large. Then close the iron and cook both sides. If the dough does not detach easily from the iron, coat it first with a piece of cloth that has been soaked in oil or grease.

  •  1911 – First electric waffle iron introduced by General Electric.
  • 1953 – Frank Dorsa’s Eggo Frozen Waffles are sold in Supermarkets for the first time.
  • 1964 – Belgian Waffles debut at New York’s World’s Fair.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Following are a few waffle recipes for you to make and share with your family and friends!

True Belgian Waffles
Classic Buttermilk Waffles
Apple Cinnamon Waffles
Banana Oatmeal Buttermilk Waffles
Best Chocolate Chip Waffles

NOW IF waffles aren't your favorite how about.....

                            NATIONAL PEACH PIE DAY

National Peach Pie Day is observed annually on August 24th.  We celebrate this mouth-watering dessert during the heart of the Peach harvest season. Don’t forget the à la mode!

  • The state of Georgia has been known as the center of peach growers.
  • Georgia is known as the “Peach State”.
  • Peach harvest occurs between June and August.
  • Harvest from each peach tree lasts about one week.
  • There are two main varieties of peaches: Clingstone and Freestone.
  • A medium peach weighs 2.6 oz.
  • A medium peach typically contains 30 calories, 7 g of carbohydrate, 1 g of protein, 140 mg of potassium, and 8% of the daily value for vitamin C.

They both need a generous big scoop of vanilla Ice Cream. yes

I just had a late breakfast of eggs, bacon, cheese and blueberry waffles.

Yum!

I like peach pie too but cherry is my favorite.
Sorry Dorothy carbs are bad for me so I think I will pass on both.

Bacon yes

I had two eggs over easy with 3 sausage links and grits. I also had two pieces of rye toast with butter and hot tea so waffles would have been way too many carbs.
Love waffles; Love peaches. Tomorrow I hope to buy another box of peaches to make some more preserves and peach salsa. I know, I know, some don't believe in peach salsa but my Mexican friends assure me that it is just fine. Their favorite salsa outside of salsa verde (which I also make) is blueberry. Sunday might well be sliced peaches on top of waffles day.

Waffles also reminded me of when I was an undergraduate. One of the buildings was referred to as the "Awful Waffle."
Doug peach salsa is good on fish and chicken.  Just like mango or any of the other citrus flavors.
I'll have three waffles with bacon and eggs and a side of peach pie with homemade vanilla ice cream! Thank you, Dorothy, for your wonderful "Today Is" post.
Well, this is easy ... just make peach waffles!! lol
There is nothing like a great waffle....

Hello Everyone!

Thanks for hosting the Chat, Laura!

I spent yesterday chasing rabbits.  How could I not, when they quarry's name is Cousins?  Anyway, I can't hunt and fold at the same time, so I have no fresh origami today.  I'll try to get one up over the weekend.  Meanwhile, here is a shot of my office menagerie (right click and View Image to see all of it).  Except for the white birds, all of them started off as 15 cm (6") squares of paper.

Cheers,

Herb

So cool!   Did you name them?

LOL Laura, the only one with a name is Guy Fawkes (who BTW was by far the most challenging one).  I did call some of them names, though.  laugh

Always impressed by the origami, man. Good work and I promise to refrain from any Elmer Fudd references as you hunt the wabbit.

Laura! You’re hosting again! Cool!!

Finally, FINALLY, I got my younger brother to join WT as a family member. Now to get him to Volunteer. I’m excited, as he has already found a few corrections for me to make.

Lots of visitors recently means diet out the window for me and my wife. More visitors coming!  Ugh!

My Oder daughter has been having health issues for several years, and now the docs figure that it’s going to take an operation, the removal of a portion of her large intestine. Scheduled end of September. My wife will fly down and stay several weeks while I hold down the home front. We both hope this works as our daughter has been battling this with diets and medication to no avail.

Genealogy-wise, I’m moving slowly, like I should have from the beginning. Fewer new profiles, more sourcing on old ones, especially since I was so careless starting out. Just wish I had more time. Just the maintenance of the property eats my days, but the results are beautiful. Sunny days are helping!

Smelled gas in the cab of my truck (and outside when I stopped) this week. Took it in, and the shop found a rusted leaking gas line at the tank! Fixed, but I think it’s time for a Second Amendment solution for this old truck (1998). Shop dude has one (2004) in much better shape. Just might get that one,

Otherwise, all is well.

Thanks, Laura, for hosting Weekend Chat again.

Pip, Sorry your daughter is having medical problem. Those are never fun.
Thank you, Doug, my Canadian researcher!
Beulah, you are so funny! We have one of those kitchen fire extinguishers, but I don’t think that it would have done much good. I was worried less about the truck (I was kinda hoping it would burn to cinders), than I was about me in it.
Pip, prayers coming your way for your daughter, and your family. Wishing her a speedy recovery!
Speaking as a wife, mother and grandmother of volunteer firemen, I was
referring to having the gas spill being cleaned up instead of accidentally being ignited.  Many rural car accidents are cleaned up every year with
similar situations.  I'm sure they would gladly put you out, if needed, also.
Ahhh, I get it now. The leak in the driveway was very small, just dripping, thank goodness. It only dropped when the engine was running.

We’ve got something in common, Beulah. My brother was a volunteer fireman for many years, and my son-in-law is a fireman in SC.
Thank you so much, David.
Pip sorry to hear about your daughter, praying everything goes well with her surgery. Will keep good thoughts and prayers coming your way.
We, me and the wife, truly appreciate this, Dallace.
Vibes to the daughter Pip - scary for sure - vehicles are only going to last for so long - and it is a shame - finally got my tires and alignment on my boat in June but now the electrical system is starting to go - so sad!  My wipers wont wipe except once in a while randomly - my dash lights went south this week - Monday and Tuesday they faded in after a few miles but now they are gone - lucky I still have clock, radio and the bright headlight indicator - starts every time and has a good AC still so this may just be a summer car - gas problems I have been through several times and are scary as heck - glad you did not blow sky high!

Hello Friends and Neighbors

It is the weekend already! And what a beautiful weekend so far we been having. Where has time gone? Well this past week I was working at finding information on my biological family and have finally discovered that my biological mother passed in 2014. I knew from day one since I started searching that it was a possibility but not one wants to expect. So here we are now Friday and am working on some things for the Pennsylvania Project. Today also appears like a good day for some pictures for Graves of Veterans. Hopefully I won't get much sun glare.

Well till next time thanks for all the hard work everyone does on wikitree also thanks to Laura for hosting this weekends edition of Weekend Chat

Steve this week someone mistakenly flagged our resident comic guru, Chris... it was obviously a mistake as nothing he posted could even with a great imagination be construed to be abusive.  Someone unflagged him so all was well but because there are no instructions by the flag some people think it is a way to highlight a post and think it is a compliment instead of being an alert to abuse.

So thanks for reminding us about what the flag is for!  Great tip!
Sorry about your birth mom dude - bummer

thanks for tips
Thanks Navarro.

Hey, Wikipeeps! (Two weeks in a row I've stolen Steve's term for Wikitreers. Let's see if he notices this week.)

This week I have been hanging out in the Genetic Genealogy Facebook group. It's pretty fun. You should check it out because you might find some familiar faces hanging around there. They're pretty cool.

One of their members, a lady named Dana Leeds, devised a very interesting way to categorize your DNA matches on the 2nd-3rd cousin level. She even did it on the 4th level. All you need is Excel or another spreadsheet program. Check it out here: http://dnawithdana.com/

She devised it for adoptees, but, I've adapted it to see where everyone falls in my tree. Well, the ones I have confirmed anyway. I only confirmed two 4th cousins. Everyone else is higher than 4th or closer. It's a very interesting strategy to be sure. I was thinking of posting about this in the greater g2g area. But, here is good. The DNA group would have a field day with this I am sure.

You can find the group here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/geneticgenealogytipsandtechniques/

It's fun. Check it out!

How do you guys organize your matches? I tend to color code everyone for my parents. Mom's side is pink. Dad's is blue. From there I list the cMs, the common ancestor etc. Pretty basic. Oh and I list by degree. My first cousin's on the top of the list. Then it's my parents' cousins etc.

Not much else to report. Have a great weekend!

Oh and the Find a Graves I made for my great-grandparents went over well. Saw my grandfather's on my mom's side. Cleaned that up. My great-aunt wants to take me to Walnut cemetery in Haverhill to see about looking up more of the Legaults and Felkers. Will be bringing phone. May take her up on the offer.

Oh my. THIEF You hurt my one single feeling broken heartcrying

P.S.

I'm glad you liked it

Just the one? Gotta do better next time. =P

Rumor has it I only have one cheeky

Well, we'll get you more off of Amazon. They should be on sale. =)

I had this email with Chris on this topic last night.  Sharing it here with you all..  (hmm that's twice I have typed you all must be evoking some southern roots!)

I use 3 techniques
1.  Spreadsheets where I download
     a.  One to many report
     b.  Run the top matches for branches.  I create a column with a name to create the branches.  If I tried to use colors I would run out of them..
      c.  But I do use color to separate out the most probable to the least probable. on that overall spreadsheet
2.   I use index cards.   These I can layout on the floor and see how the lines may go together.  If I am not sure about someone I can make multiple cards for that person and try them in different positions. Sometimes I use color codes on the cards for Totally verified, probably true, and not sure where it fits..
3.  I enter in a gedcom the verified and if I have enough sources the probably true (meaning a census or find a grave can have errors so those fall into the probably true instead of totally verified.)
That's a very neat way to do it,. too. With the Leeds Method I have two huge batches of matches. One on my dad's and one on my mom's. Here's hoping more people get tested.
I am always amazed at how few people I am closely related to who have tested.   Gave kits to both my sons and their wives but they id not make their results shareable...  sigh....   I think I was hatched!
Some people may not have wanted to bother. It's up to people if they want to be tested. Maybe you can convince them to share the results. I think that option is still there.

I was amazed at how many people I am closely related too tested. I didn't even know my first cousin did a test. And you remember that "duh" moment I had with another cousin. That was....interesting.

Still need to figure out how other 4th cousins match. I have two so far.

On Monday I was the taxi driver for one of the grandchildren, band practice, and in between dropping him off and picking him up I talked with his younger brother. I showed him where to take practice tests for an Amateur Radio License and he took one. He was saying how hard it was but I think he did OK for his first attempt, he only got 28% right but that was with no studying. On WikiTree I continued with reducing my watchlist, I am under 1300 now, and even managed to open a profile that was unlisted. My project for now is going thru the 9 documents I downloaded for information I need to work at the Geauga County Fair next weekend and program my radios. Next weekend I may be MIA here because the fair starts Thursday and runs thru Monday. So far I am positive I will be going Friday morning about 9 AM until??? and Sunday Morning from 9 AM till 2 PM. It is possible that I could work other hours if the need is there. The work at the fair is not that hard, I would either be manning a golf cart to assist patrons who need assistance or else I would just be walking around the fairgrounds with my radios looking for those who are having trouble. I like to look for trouble. devilLOL

Did you at least take the kids to the candy store? =)
No I did not Chris, I was broke and candy is bad for not only them but me as well.
Fair enough. =D I am sure they had a great time!
Enjoy your time at the Fair I hope you have nice weather to make it more enjoyable
Steve, they say it is going to get hot again for that weekend so we shall see.
Community involvement is a good thing, Dale.  If you are MIA next week we will miss you but know you are doing good works and we will be cheering you on!
Such a busy person you are - hi bye Dale

Weekend ...Already? Well I have decided to go back to my first close relatives and add headers for records, birth, death, census, this helps in lookin at the profile to see what's there. I noticed many of these profiles were created before I became a regular user of Family Search so I went and collected more records. I like the effect and sometimes I even learn something about them. I also add formatted source records and categories like universities.

I did get out and do some yard work but it is time time again! Actually I never finished the job in the back and you can see.

The weekend is looking to be quite busy. The garden was producing pretty well until a hail storm earlier in the week did quite a bit of damage. Things are recovering but Fall is getting close. So this weekend is making more peach preserves and salsa, tomatillo preserves and salsa, and start freezing beans.

Genealogy-wise, I plan to add sources and improve citations and bios of my NB families. Also need to finish up a couple of WWI soldiers I started.

I also need to do my homework for class on Wednesday. I'm taking an art course on achieving realism based on a text by James Gurney. Yesterday we binge watched the Dinotopia miniseries which was created by Gurney. I'm behind with the homework so will need to work at least some each day to get caught up.

Garden tip for preserving herbs:  Blanch them, drop them into ice cube trays with water.  Freeze and then pop out the cubes as you need them.  Drop them into boiling water with your food and voila...  fresh herbs like herbs... and remember when converting a recipe...  you need 3 times fresh herbs vs dried ones... the flavor is in the oils and drying the herbs intensifies the oils.
Doug, that art course sounds amazing! I’ll have to read more about that artist.

Laura, I will definitely use your herb tips! My mother-in-law just helped me plant some on our new property.
What kind did you plant?   Do you know how to blanch?   When I was doing speaking engagements on the History and Uses of Spice I found it was something of a lost art.   Happy to explain it if someone needs to know how to blanch...

Haven't tried blanching and freezing. We do blanch fruits and vegetables when prepping. We mostly either dry herbs or for basil and parsley we put them in the food processor and chop them with a little olive oil and freeze in ice cube trays. Sort of pre-pesto. Next large project is to put in a largish herb garden. I do grow my most used herbs indoors. Ever use the herb zatar? I need to prune back the rosemary and today I repotted and reduced in size my lemongrass. It does fine inside if you have the room since it will grow 10+ feet high and fill a 24inch pot.

Doug I just sold a spice company.  I used to make Za'tar.  It is a Middle Eastern spice blend.  There are some cultures who call specific species of Oregano or some other plants za'tar but those vary by region.   I used Greek Oregano most often instead of Mexican.  They taste completely different.

Most often za'tar is either a spice blend or a condiment and the recipes vary a lot by specific region and even within families.

I made several versions as custom blends for clients.

The frozen pesto version is good that you are doing.too.

Glad you know how to blanch.
Laura, we use both a Za'tar spice blend (from Penzies since they have a local store) and one of the oregano species -- Origanum syriaca.  We also grow some Greek and Mexican oregano but I prefer the Greek. When the new herb garden goes in, it will have a wide variety of hardy herbs. We will be planting in chimney tiles to keep things like mint and horseradish under control.
Most Za'atar (just noticed one of the "a" letters was missing...

dry blends are a combination of ground oregano (Greek not Mexican), thyme, marjoram and sesame seeds (white or a combination of white and black) with a course ground sea salt..  Some recipes add in one or more of the following caraway (more Palestinian), sumac (more Lebanese), cumin, coriander, fennel, or savory (generally a mixture of summer and winter varieties).

A wet condiment also called Za'atar is made with dried hyssop leaves, sesame seeds (white or a mix of white and black), sumac, a course ground sea salt, and other spices that are sometimes mixed in like what is used in the above dry version.

There are also plants that are locally called Za'atar.  They include things like oregano, marjoram, thyme (several varieties), savory and hyssop.

Most often in modern usage the spice is mixed with oil and used on pita or breads.  It is also used as a meat seasoning.  Lesser use is on vegetables or other foods although I have heard of some putting it into hummus or yogurt I did not see that done very often.

Some steeped it as a tea for medicinal or "health" reasons but I have nothing that shows it works in terms of scientific literature.  I am still looking...
If I had the room, I would grow the type of sumac used in Middle Eastern cooking but it isn't hardy here so would need to be indoors and I've run out of room for big things. Lots of uses. Ground with thyme, it is great on popcorn. I should have put in a greenhouse before I retired. I do grow hyssop as well. A lot of herbs make great ornamentals and fill plants. So many interesting plants. We sort of have a rule that everything that gets watered outside has to feed either us or wildlife.
We potted mammoth basil, oregano, parsley, mint, and thyme. I have blanched just one before... dip in boiling water for a few seconds? My kids love making ice cubes, so that will be good!
Yes a few seconds in boiling water... then immerse in ice wash and drop into ice cube trays with some water and freeze.

Greetings From Brightlingsea, Essex, England

Its the Bank Holiday Weekend and there is the Brightlingsea Food Festival on at the weekend on our Promenade. Should be a good event, hope the weather is kind for those days.                                                                         Monday being the Bank Holiday, will bring a Car Boot Sale on the Promenade in the morning. Then the Town Show in the afternoon at the Community Centre. Originally just a Horticultural Show it now has broadened its appeal covering arts and crafts, a dog show and other attractions.

Last week a question was raised over the Foresters Chief Ranger and a uniform. There is no uniform as such but the office holder has a neck collar to wear for meetings and Forestric functions. Other officers have similar collars to wear, all in lincoln green.

Smoke from the Western wild fires is kind of affecting life around here ... some good days, some bad ... depends on the weather and the winds.  We could use some good rain storms out West!

School is cranking up ... took care of our grand daughter the first part of the week as school didn't start until Thursday and the kids are both working.  Grand Daughter is six going on seven and in first grade ... good times ... she loves school.

Plugging away at my Jewett ancestors and adding profiles.  I have a couple of Jewett books with about 10K folks listed ... I'm at 7750 or there abouts.  Pretty much 1850's to 1900's or so for birth dates that I'm working on.  Always a plus when I run across someone that did something notable.

I am so, so tired of not seeing the mountains and not being able to breathe then when we get rain the hail comes.
Always fun with the grandchildren are over.  Ours are both coming this weekend and we love every minute of them being here.

Sorry to hear you are being affected by those awful wildfires.  Even if it is mainly from smoke carried by the wind.

I have been trying to set some weekly goals...

clean up 10 suggestions from the orphans I adopted.

add 10 more people from my gedcom

Some weeks it is hard to get that much done!  Always seem to have new projects cropping up....

There is an amusing thread in G2G and I got confused and thought it was here on the Weekend Chat!  https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/668532/whos-been-peeking-at-my-database?show=669700#c669700

The upshot is that Pip is related to the world and I am related to hardly anyone!  When I used

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Special:Connection  to see how I was related to Pip I got this dismal response:

No Connection Found ... Yet  Sorry, no connection was found between Pip and Laura within 10 degrees. There is a connection, but maybe it's more than 10 steps or maybe it's just not on WikiTree yet. Please help grow the family connections of Pip and Laura until they meet.

So you see, I am beginning to think I was hatched!  Doug tried to help and found out he was also not related to me!
So here is a quick Weekend Chat Challenge...  who is the most closely related to me... or was I hatched?
Drop in your Wiki ID and mine is Pennie-22  Let's see if anyone is more closely related to me than Queens Elizabeth or Victoria who are both in the mid 30s...
by Laura Bozzay G2G6 Pilot (840k points)

No connection to you or Pip ... yet.  crying

Url was a little broken. Fixed: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Special:Connection

No connection with me and Laura.  No connection with me and Pip. That's okay. I don't have a connection with Robynne, either. Or Herbert.

Most of the connections here are on my mom's side. It's rare to find people on my dad's. And here it's 2 people I know (first cousins once removed), my great-aunt, a 2nd cousin and a 3rd cousin.

So...If anyone has a connection on my DAD's side. Please let me know. I'll invite ya over for lasagna. Everyone's comin' over. Donnie's comin' over. Nonnie's comin' over. Gigi's comin' over....*trails on forever*
Just so you all know.. I have entered my line from Scotland back to the 1600s, from Germany and Prussia back to the 1600s, From French back to 1400s...  so the odds would say I should have a boat load of cousins but.. I don't seem to on WikiTree.   I do communicate with about 450 cousins all over the world almost every day but most of them are not on Wiki and most are non-English speaking, reading, or writing.
We MIGHT have a connection, Laura. I have Tedescos in my line. Tedesco is Italian for German. Then again Tedesco is like Smith in Italy.
Well, we're all connected as far as I'm concerned.
How is it possible, Laura, that you’ve got Scottish blood and aren’t related to me? Impossible!
True that, Herbert.

https://www.WikiTree.com/index.php?title=Special:FamilyList&x=14839456,fb1a

15 generations of my line.  You will notice I have some fairly common surnames in this list...  it is a mystery...

We might be related Laura, My grandfather was born in Scotland but sadly I can not trace his family back too far. The surname of Smith is giving me a major problem there and my great grandfather was one of the dreaded John Smith's.

You know I do have a Ross in my line. That goes to Scotland.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Ross-13086

Can't get anything beyond Houston Ross, though. That's as far back as my Rosses go from Georgianna, my 2X great-grandmother.

Won't be getting a kilt any time soon. (God that Ancestry commercial annoys me.)

Nope - you are not related or connected to me - bummer I know I have Pip but I forget - let me see again

OK 11th cousins 4 times removed - not much but it is something

Pip an I connect through this person:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Goulding-133
Yep, I am thinking I was hatched or dropped off by a spaceship!

It is weird that I have lines that go so far back, have cousins all over the world and virtually no connections on WikiTree.   I am connected to the global tree.  When I do find a connection they tend to be in the 30s or more.

Go figure...  You would think with names like Kerr (a great grandmother) and Robertson (a great great grandmother) on the Scottish side I would have tons alone.

I have one DNA cousin (4th I think) through my German Koenig line here on WikiTree.

I have a bunch of glass and crystal maker lines from my French side including Walter, Stenger (Stanger in the US), Burgun (also seen as Bourgon and Burgundt and Bourgogne) and Schwoerer (also seen as Schwere or Schvere).  These folks all had big families.  I am tangentally through marriage related to Greiner.
Dang Chris - no lasagna for me - 9th cousins on your mom's side through:https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Coutancineau-18
Another one for Julien? Wow. That's you AND Guy. I'll add ya to the list of Wikitree cousins. No lasagna. But, can I interest you in a baquette?

This here is from August 6 -12 weekend after this I will put what happened in the Barnetts house this week on August 12 -19th and August 19 thru 26th. Now for the download for August 6th to 12th for the Barnett family. Monday my dad was stronger and coopareted with us and eat very good every meal that  day. But Tuesday was not a good day. He started Monday night not wearing his CPAP mask. He never talks sense when he doesn't also mom had an eye appointment and was quite because he was tried from dialysis. Then Wednesday he was pretty coorpative even with the nurse he sang to the nurse twice to her and mom said he sang with her also that morning. Thursday was another Tuesday this week. Friday mom had a appointment that morning and dad's therapists came by the first wrong he did okay with but the second he doesn't like so he acts very bad with him but he did holler for mom some that day but not much. Saturday morning again for the second time his blood clotted the machine since it was at the end of it the didn't stop it and change machine like they did the first time. They just stopped it and called mother. Also mom got her hair cut that night. He started with his weight as 233 at the first of the year now he weighs 196 that is 63 lbs. he has lost and not gaining any and he eats like a hog. He can't even remember after he eats since he has vascular dementia that he just eat and tries to get me or my mom to fix him something again we have to make him go back to his lift chair. My mom has her two knees replaced, her back and shoulders hurt her and her shoulder needs to be replace but since my dad is what he is they can't replace them. But my mom has to take pain medicine for her arthritis disease. So she falls more easily because she is so tired because of my dad so she has to stay up at night to get anything done when my dad is in bed. So my mother can even standing up and doing dishes can fall asleep and if she not in a chair she will fall on the ground or the floor and now can't get up and that is what happened last night and about 1:00 this morning she called a guy that works as a volunteer EMT to get her up and we told him that we are going to be moving very soon. So after that I am going to sleep in my living room in case she needs me during the nights because she hit the floor very hard with her behind and it hurts now. I did that when I was in the 7th grade or 8th on the concrete when just walking on the sidewalk at school. It was sore for about a month so it might be longer than that for mom. She did try to get up for about 1 to 2 hours before she called him. Also mom told me we can't eat out anymore at resturants that we have to wait for our food because my dad sits where he can see people come out of the kitchen and if they don't stop at our table he will motion and holler for them to come and bring the food to the table that is very embarrassing to handle even for my mom. So we have to pick up food and take home or if we are going to my sisters take there and eat it or at a picnic table or off the road to eat. Then today he kept go to the table saying he is ready to eat even if he had just eaten.

Also since it hurts her shoulders and back so much she saying that she needs to stop driving but she can not because she the major driver between the three of us.

We also find out that Monday August 13 we go up with Dad to a place and sign and pay the rest of the house and closing fee and we have to be up there at 1:00 in the afternoon. So after that we will start very slowly moving things up there till we get everything up there because of my dad. We closed on Mom's and Dad's house on Monday August 13th. Then on Tuesday August 14th while dad was at dialysis we had my carpet in the living room and hall, downstairs bedroom and stairs and moms living room carpet cleaned. Then dad had to go to have and impression on his tooth that he had root canal done so he can get a permanet crown on it he just has a temporary one on what now. He bit the lady that was during that. Mom picked up new medicine on Wednesday but didn't take one of it till Saturday morning. Thursday and Friday was okay days. But when mom came home from getting groceries she fixed me and dad breakfast for supper and didn't even remember doing that and she didn't eat hers and because of the new medicine made her sick to her stomach and she wasn't hungry and she sat down in her recliner and slept till about 3 or 4 o'clock in the morning of Sunday. So this was August 18th that this happened. Then she got to moving around no matter that she didn't still feel good and she realize that women her age aren't suppose to wear open scuffs that will catch on thresholds and make them fall. She fell very hard I on August 19th about 5:00 p.m. and couldn't get up so we had to finally about 9:00 p.m. we called that guy again for the second weekend in a roll. She fell so hard that her left hip was so swollen that the EMT thought she had broken it or dislocated it but it was just a contusion that it still hurts her. I felt and heard her fall. So he had her go to the hospital and so she had to call my sister and brother-in-law to come and stay with me and dad because we thought she might have to stay for about 5 days in the hospital but since she could walk on it when the EMT got her up to get on the gurney and doctor at the hospital said it wasn't broken or dislocated that she could go on home so she did. That was good because my dad thought he was ordered and need to go to the hospital to be with her. I told him that I or neither was my sister or her spouse going to take him and I asked him how did he think he was going and he said the ambulance will come and get him. I told him if that was the case he would have gone with mom and that they weren't coming back for him. Then about 2 times he went outside in the dark and sat on the front porch so I had to stay outside with him since he has full blown vascular dementia. Me and my sister couldn't get him to go to bed. Since Monday I have been sleeping in my recliner and helping mother a lot around the house. All of the upper left leg is purple and still swollen. The night before this happened dad slept in his lift chair in the living room with mother since she couldn't and didn't feel like changing him and putting the CPAP on him. So I kept a close eye on him and mother. She didn't remember nothing from the time she fixed us supper on Saturday until 4:00 A,M. on Sunday on the day she felled. So far this weekend she hasn't fallen I hope she doesn't. So my sister and brother-in-law didn't leave until 5:00 p.m. Monday and during that time on Monday morning I had a cleaning dental appoint that I went to. They did some errands and did some work on the house while they were here. They bought my nephew the dog Ollie with them. So from August 18, 21, 23, and yesterday I have been taking and bring my dad home from dialysis because after my mom cleans my dad up and gets him ready to go she is so tired that she thinks it will be better for me to do that than her trying to get ready and take him or even go get him also. No other appointments except for mine that I had for Monday. He getting pretty bad about going to the bathroom and acts real bad while my mom and before my mom changes him and gets him dressed.

Also on August 17th mom was going to leave to go to town and I was still finishing up the riding mowing on the yard and mom couldn't wait for me to come in and left. So when I came in I find him in their refrigator and had a fruit cup which need to be drained because he can't have thin liquid because it cause him to get pneumonia. So he timed it while I was finishing the mowing and mom left he got up and got a fruit cup that he knew mother wouldn't let him have. So I asked him for it so I can drain it for him and when I was going to do that he was trying to open it and eat it even without a fork or spoon even and he was going to eat it in the living room where we just had the carpet cleaned and I told him to get to the kitchen table to eat it and I need to have that so I could drain it and give him a spoon for him to use to eat it with. So he had punctured it and he decide to throw it at me on the floor in the dining room so I just got it and put back in the refrigerator and had him get back into his lift chair. He was very upset but I knew he wasn't suppose to have it. So that is the up-to-date on the Barnetts for right now.

Welcome everyone on the WikiTree Weekend Chat especially the newbie to it and to WikiTree.

Today is......

     "NATIONAL SECONDHAND WARDROBE DAY"

National Secondhand Wardrobe Day encourages deals and savings each year across the United States on August 25. Find steals in secondhand and consignment stores all day long on gently worn clothing for all ages.

Secondhand shopping offers numerous benefits. Beginning with the savings, for a fraction of the price of retail, thrifty shoppers fill their wardrobe while pocketing the savings.  Additionally, they conveniently shop for the whole family in one or two stores.  Many secondhand stops cater to particular age groups making it easier to find the styles shoppers seek. Instead of ending up in a landfill, the lightly used clothing gets another go around. National Secondhand Wardrobe Day benefits the Earth as well!

Freeing up some of your closet space and giving some of your rarely worn clothes will benefit you with extra space.  Donating your clothing will be helping someone else who is a secondhand store shopper.  Your donation will be a blessing to them as well as to the charity that runs the store.

This above scenario is the recycling, reusing, re-purposing cycle we are trying to teach the next generation.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Each of us have clothes we haven't worn for months or clothes that no longer fit us. Since fall is almost here, great time to reorganize our closets and set up for cooler weather. For all secondhand store shoppers, you could go out and try to find an entire wardrobe in secondhand stores across the land where ever you live!!

by Dorothy Barry G2G Astronaut (2.7m points)
What a great Idea!  Most of my favorite clothes are second hand
In our town the big thing is to go to garage sales and get great children clothes and toys.  We have some resale shops but most of the people I know enjoy the garage sale route...

It's Saturday! and I can actually see the mountains today!!!!

Hope all is well with everyone today. First up here is to head to the farmer's market for more peaches and, if I'm lucky, some elephant heart plums. Those are iffy and the one grower wasn't sure if there were going to be enough to sell this year. Then start on the herb garden. That will take a while to construct. I also realized it is only 2 weeks away from the Scottish/Irish Festival and I have to get the Clan MacCallum/Malcolm Society tent ready. I'm the local convener for that so have to get things ready now.

Genealogy wise, I need to continue cleanup of profiles that I've neglected. They were uploaded by someone else years ago and are mostly unsourced and still have GEDCOM cruft.

by Doug McCallum G2G6 Pilot (542k points)
Scottish Festivals here are a lot of fun with all kinds of genealogy tents by surname, athletic competitions, sheep herding demos, food and of course stuff to buy like tartans and badges.   Sounds like you are going to be busy!

So are you related to David McCallum alias "Ducky" on NCIS or Ilya from the Man from Uncle?   He was a major heart throb in the 60s / 70s

I end up talking a lot about Scottish history and the Clan/Clan Society. Friends come over from Tucson to help and it can be a lot of fun. Next year will be the most work. I will be hosting the annual meeting and it will bring people from all over.

Probably not related to Ducky. Haven't gotten far enough back on mine to know for sure but my current suppositions need to be looked at more closely. By Y DNA testing I fall well into Clan O'Neill. It matches pretty well. The chief of Clan MacCallum/Malcolm did have a plantation in Ireland in the right timeframe. There is also the typical princess legend in the family. This one is that we are descended from an Irish princess from the O'Neill line so some things match up. Any number of situations could result in surname McCallum really being an O'Neill. I haven't found any O'Neill or related names in the region my ancestors settled in New Brunswick in the mid-1700s and so far I can pretty much verify the Y back to at least a GGGrandfather. I'm looking for two more people to take a Y test. Another descended from the original McCallum immigrant from a very different line and one descended from the person we suspect as the father.

Well it appears the McCallum Clan had Irish branches so O'Neill is not that far fetched.

There are a lot of Scottish actors and actresses who belong to clans so I had to ask...  but I knew it was likely a long shot!
