Biography

Prudence Alcock, supposed daughter of Henry Awlcock and Sarah Church, was born about 1605 possibly in Berkley, Bristol, England. However, there is no evidence that she ever existed. See discussion on g2g: "Does Prudence Alcock Whitman person really exist?"

Some say, citing only other online trees,[1][2] that she was married Puritan Great Migration immigrant John Whitman about 1625, emigrated with him, then died August 17, 1662 (age 57) in Weymouth, Suffolk County (Present Norfolk County), Massachusetts Bay Colony, (Present USA), and that she was the mother of at least one of his children:

  • Hannah Whitman, b. August 24, 1641, d. Bef. 1685.

Others question these origins and relationships. See profile of John Whitman. Prudence (Alcock) Whitman is not named the vital records of Weymouth or in the published genealogy sources reviewed for Torrey's Marriages before 1700:[3]

"WHITMAN, John (-1692, ae 90) & ?Mary/?Ruth ____ (-1662); in Eng, by 1629; Weymouth/Abington/Bridgewter {NYGBR 69:364; Weymouth 4:753; Bridgewater 335; Winthrop-Babcock 553; Whitman (1889); Chute ccxli; Caldwell Anc. 13; Kimball Anc.78-79; Robinson (,7) 15; Avery Anc. (1925) 126}."

Henry Awlcock has been attached as father and should be detached.

This profile is flagged as unsourced. I think given that the profile describes Prudence as of uncertain existence, its adequately sourced and the Unsourced tag should be removed. If someone wants to prove her existence then, sources would need to be provided. Any objections to removing Unsourced, and leaving Uncertain Existence?

If she is a prevalent internet error, we can keep her as is.

Well, if an alternate identity is needed to give the profile a raison d'être, there's a Prudence Alcocke b. 7 May 1615 at Cheshire; father, John -- see familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NHDJ-RPR ; she evidently lived only a few months, dying on 18 August -- familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F7ZX-T32 . No existing WT profile. There's also a (surely related) Prudentiam Alcock who m. Johnem. Pickering on 2 Dec. 1686 at Cheshire -- https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F1MQ-7R4 . [I've got Pickerings in my tree, but they're from Warwick -- a good 50 mi. from Cheshire -- or else I'd take more interest in Prudentiam and her line.]

Since we have the supposed (but unproven) parents linked to from the profile, I am detaching her from them. I realize this makes her floating unattached in the wiki-aether, but since she probably didn't exist, what else do we do with her?

Based on the (old....) discussion in g2g, attached here above, I'm disconnecting her from John Whitman.

Per husband John's profile, there appears to be some doubt that she was wife of the PGM immigrant (or mother of his children).

Please check the dates for Prudence and her father Henry. His profile says he died about 1596. Hers says she was bon 1605. Not possible.
Some profiles spell the last name Alcock. They say she was born in Herfordshire England Married John Whitman on June 5, 1627 In herfordshire England. I found information on Ancestry freepages, google, my heritage. She may be a second wife or not at all but there are too many profiles to ignore. Please someone help with this.
