Biography

Thomas was a Friend (Quaker)

Thomas Austin was born about 1 July 1651 in Dover Neck, Dover, Massachusetts Bay Colony in what later became New Hampshire, son of Joseph Austin and Sarah Starbuck.

Thomas was a carpenter and a Quaker. Not a single Austin appears in baptism lists of the 1700’s: the inference is that they were all Quakers.

The Austin family ran saw mills until somewhere between 1719 and 1760.

Thomas died after 1704 in Strafford, Dover, New Hampshire.

Name

The name derives from an original "Augustine," leading to later "Oistine, Oiston, Osten" and other variants.
